  1. Yes, that is him. I've talked to him several times but don't really know a whole lot about him. I'm kinda surprised the police haven't searched the house yet.
  2. If Garcia bats 2nd, it's not because he should be batting second, it's because there's absolutely nobody else in the lineup that is even remotely qualified for that spot. In the long run, Garcia needs to be batting 3rd and Abreu 4th.
  3. Next door neighbor was apprehended in Louisville last night.
  4. I like the current home jerseys far better than the 83 home jerseys, but I've never particularly liked the current road jerseys, so I'd rather bring back the 83 jerseys for more away games than home games.
  5. McCown isn't leaving the Bears to be a backup somewhere else. He's only leaving for a starters job, and a starters job is going to pay more than the Bears' can afford to spend on a backup. The only issue is if the team that wants to try to lowball their offer to the point that it isn't significantly more than a backup's salary and then McCown may actually decide to stay put. Otherwise I think he has to take an offer to start somewhere. I guess there's a small chance that he's made enough money and invested it well to the point that an extra $1M doesn't mean much to him, but I think it would be awfully hard to tell your family you are turning down $1M.
  6. Did you really expect a guy who got DFA'd by Houston to be much of a contributor?
  7. GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto (Michael CLAY-toh) off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and have designated infielder Jake Elmore for assignment. Cleto, 24, combined to go 3-5 with a 5.52 ERA (56 ER/91.1 IP) and 89 strikeouts in 35 games (10 starts) last season between Class AAA Memphis in the St. Louis organization and Class AAA Omaha in the Royals system. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Cleto also appeared in one game with the Cardinals (June 5 vs. Arizona) before being claimed off waivers by Kansas City on June 23. He pitched in six games for Licey in the Dominican Winter League, allowing one run on two hits with 13 strikeouts over 9.2 IP (0.93 ERA). A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Cleto has gone 24-40 with a 4.93 ERA (319 ER/582.2 IP) and 508 strikeouts in 174 games (90 starts) over seven minor-league seasons. He also made 13 relief appearances with the Cardinals from 2011-13, allowing 18 runs in 15.2 IP (10.34 ERA) with 26 strikeouts. Cleto, who will wear uniform No. 39, originally was signed by the New York Mets as a non-drafted free agent on August 10, 2006. He is expected to join the White Sox in major-league camp on Thursday. Elmore, 26, was claimed off waivers from Houston on November 13, 2013.
  8. Maybe a few people, but I think most understand that the NFL has a salary cap and the money not spent on McCown would be going to another player and not in the team's pocket. Also, even if you assume that McCown would be the league's highest paid backup and if he leaves you would have the league's lowest paid backup, that difference isn't going to be enough to make or break some other unit on the field.
  9. So New York would technically be one state, with the entire state voting for 2 US Senators and giving its electoral votes to one Presidential candidate, but aside from that each part would have its own government, complete with a governor, legislature, and tax laws? Very interesting concept. I wonder if that could work judicially, because lawsuits are filed by/against states and not parts of states.
  10. Are you staying anywhere near an L line? Much cheaper than parking.
  11. Only one game that will sell out, but we're talking about a block of a few thousand seats that they are fixated on. They won't do a night game due to the 2+ hour drive for most of them and being unwilling to drive that much that late at night or get a hotel room. They have to be on the RF line to get the late afternoon shade, they don't want to be too close to the RF corner, and they want to be as close to the field as possible. So yes, they'll pay more to get all of their criteria met.
  12. I don't disagree that California is a mess and that it is partly because of its size, but any plan to split it is going to fail due to partisan reasons from one side or the other. But yes, this particular petition has tried to make the new borders as Republican-friendly as possible.
  13. No, the family has a very specific preference about when to go and where to sit. Nearly all of them go to only one game per year and care less about the price of the ticket than the date and time of the game and location of the seats. The game has to be a Saturday afternoon game between mid-May and mid-August, and the seats have to be in Sections 113-118 in the front 20 rows. I suggested we wait to see if there were any discount codes, but they were worried about not getting their preferred location (which we did get). If nothing else the Sale bobbleheads may one day fetch a price on e-bay that makes up for the cost of the tickets.
  14. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2014...ts-green-light/ Of course, any changing of state boundaries requires Congressional approval, along with the affected state(s). Splitting California into six parts would add 10 Senate seats (and thus 10 electoral votes). I haven't drilled down to the voting patterns of each of the six areas, but I assume that at the very least South California would be heavily Republican and perhaps one or two of the others may lean Republican as well. I can't see the Democrats in Congress agreeing to anything that would tilt the Electoral College in the Republicans favor, so this seems like a pointless exercise to me no matter how much sense it might make. Not trying to bash Democrats here, as of course the Republicans would do the exact same thing if the roles were reversed.
  15. Move all the military money/jobs to building roads and schools.
  16. If you assume that the 25 man roster will carry 12 pitchers and 2 catchers, there are 11 spots left for other position players. Dunn, Abreu, Beckham, Ramirez, Gillaspie, DeAza, Eaton, AGarcia, Konerko, Keppinger, and Viciedo either can't or won't be sent to the minors. That's 11 guys right there, so you can keep all of them, but then you really have no backup shortstop. One out of DeAza, Viciedo, or Keppinger needs to get moved to make room on the roster for LGarcia.
  17. I need to not read the MLB and NFL draft threads consecutively. All I thought after reading this post was that there was no f***ing way the Royals were good enough last year to get the 23rd pick.
  18. As soon as I saw this I called my mom but she had already bought the tickets. Crap.
  19. I don't think Hobby Lobby should get the exemption in the first place, unless they've reorganized as a non-profit and I missed it. However, I don't necessarily find it hypocritical that they asked for the religious exemption yet don't refuse to serve gay people. They are a big box retailer--it's not like they are being solicited to create specific items for a gay wedding in the way that florists, bakeries, etc., are. They just have customers walking into stores and buying things, and it's not practical to ask every customer whether or not they are gay, using birth control, or whatever other things their particular religion is against. Not that it matters a lot, but just to clarify, the only thing that comes under the government's definition of "birth control" that Hobby Lobby and many others object to is the morning after pill, which actually works post-conception. Most protestant churches have no objection to pre-conception birth control.
  20. I checked the list of discount codes and they didn't have one listed for that game. Being a Saturday game against the Yankees and with the Sale giveaway I figure that aren't going to have one for that game. Also, I thought you had to have 20 to get a group, and group discount is only $1/ticket anyway.
  21. From that same article: Bold sections highlighted, just in case you happen to know anybody that still thinks giving up a draft pick to give Ervin Santana 4/40+ is a good idea.
