  1. It's not what you hit, it's when you hit it.
  2. Here's your revolutionary game-changer. It will cost a s***load, but it will do more to start erasing income inequality than anything else: Turn every inner-city school into a community center. Attached/adjacent to, but administered separately from, every school up to 8th grade is a community center that will provide supervision/support to children of working parents from 6am-9pm Monday-Friday and 8am-5pm Saturday. Anytime during those hours (but outside of actual school hours) parents can leave their kids there. Kids will learn life skills and social responsibility. Parents will be able to work without having to worry about who will watch the kids. Parents can also get help getting job training and help finding jobs. This is a way to keep kids not only off the streets, but doing something more productive than sitting at home watching TV/playing video games. It may take a generation or two to see the real results, but that's where you need to start. Next best thing is to be much more aggressive in taking kids away from criminal and/or drug addicted parents and give people considering adoption bigger financial incentives to do so. The government can do a lot of things, but the government can never eliminate the influence a parent has on a kid's chance at getting out of poverty. Here's one way the government can help people become better parents, and then one way to get the kids better parents if all else fails. Bernie offering free college is nice, but a lot of these kids are never going to get far enough to take advantage of that.
  3. The small conferences need conference tournaments to generate revenue. Nobody will go or watch on TV if an autobid isn't on the line, so that is never going to change.
  4. They would have had to put him on the 40 to claim him. Now they could trade for him without having to put him on the 40. Huge difference.
  5. Hopefully shack will come along and either confrim or refute this, but I don't see an MLB team succeeding in Vegas. Very high percentage of people working in the service industry, thus working lots of nights and weekends when the games are being played. You might get a little bit of attendance boost from tourism, but I don't see them pulling in the kind of TV ratings they would need to get much money from a TV deal.
  6. Find an organization that has a backlog of AAA outfielders and trade Olt there.
  7. Indy isn't interested in a MLB team. Their AAA team does really well and they're fine with that. Lots of Reds fans in between Indy and Cincy so the Reds take a hit if Indy gets a team.
  8. If you are going to create a disincentive for companies to do things like this, you have to make the number pretty big to get their attention. $5M isn't going to make that company think twice.
  9. 90, 5 games behind Detroit for the WC. Would have been the 2nd WC had such a thing existed then.
  10. Haven't actually been out to the island, but I've been to that area on both sides of the bridge and it's very nice.
  11. Maria Sharapova admits to testing positive for something called meldonium. Was just added to the WADA banned list 1/1/16 and she apparently didn't realize it was the same thing she'd been taking for 10+ years.
  12. This is what I would figure the lineups to be: vs RHP Eaton 9 Melky 7 Abreu DH Frazier 5 Laroche DH Lawrie 4 Avila 2 Rollins 6 Jackson 8 Bench: Navarro, Avi, Saladino, Schuck vs LHP Eaton 9 Lawrie 4 Abreu 3 Frazier 5 Avi DH Navarro 2 Melky 7 Rollins 6 Jackson 8 Bench: Avila, Laroche, Saladino, Shuck Shuck gets some starts vs LHP instead of Melky, Saladino gets some starts vs LHP instead of Rollins Catchers also probably aren't strictly platooned. Navaro probably gets closer to half of the starts but Sox won't face anywhere near half LHP.
  13. I rarely think this about a conference tournament, but I think chalk will hold all the way until the final, but I think MSU wins in the end.
  14. Melky isn't a good outfielder, but he's nowhere near as bad as Avi. There is no circumstance under which Melky is DH and Avi in the outfield. Laroche also has to be in the lineup vs RHP over Avi or Jackson.
  15. I'm not sure what category I fall in. Between following the other sports I care about more and the rest of my life, I just don't have time to be into hockey. I will watch the Hawks in potential clinching/elimination games in the first two rounds of the playoffs and then every game in the conference/cup finals. Other than that all I do check in about once per week to see where they are in the standings and follow this thread.
  16. This offense is still so weak, if Avi starts hitting, you have to have him in the lineup despite being rotten in RF. I can see where vs LHP, you have Jackson in CF, Eaton in RF and Avi at DH, but vs RHP, Eaton in CF, Avi in RF and Laroche DH. Or if Melky isn't hitting vs RHP then maybe Eaton in LF, Jackson in CF and Avi in RF.
  17. Speed in the leadoff spot is worthless if it never ever gets on base. Jackson barely hits well enough to bat 9th.
  18. Everybody has been wrong about this election. Most more than once.
  19. Nobody on SoxTalk calls Sox ownership cheap.
  20. Nancy Reagan, 94
  21. I used to be when 1) I lived in Chicago and could go to games and 2) The Fire were actually good, but neither of those things have been the case for quite a while now.
  22. Rubio is finished. He won't drop out until after Florida but he's finished. Kasich is about 50/50 to win Ohio right now. If he doesn't, then he'll drop out and it will be Trump v Cruz to the end. My guess is Cruz would win. If Kasich wins Ohio, then we probably get to the convention with nobody having a majority of delegates. Kasich tries to use the fact that he polls way better vs Hillary than either of the other two to try to get a brokered deal, but I can't see either of the other two going for that.
  23. He very rightly should not give up being governor of a big state to be VP, especially since he really doesn't line up well policy-wise with Trump or Cruz anyway.
  24. There's no way Bernie runs as an independent if he gets the nomination. He knows he can't win and all he can do is prevent Hillary from winning, and as much as he may dislike Hillary he 100% wants her over any Republican. But, in that hypothetical scenario, it's very unlikely anybody gets 270 electoral votes so the House gets to choose and they choose the non-Trump Republican.
