  1. Wait, there's an offense out there worse than the Sox?
  2. I'm dying to know which coach . . . http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-p...-212538419.html
  3. His OPS went from .905 in 2004 to .736 in 2005, so yeah, you can tell when they started testing.
  4. But if you let the kid go, then you are back to being one under your limit, which gives you free reign to rob recruits from other schools. Thus, we have a signing date that locks people in. Some schools don't start their Fall semesters until after the first game or two. Can a guy play a game with a team and then decide to go to another school because he isn't enrolled?
  5. Well, I don't think any team was 100% clean, but it's not unreasonable to say that the Sox got a much lower contribution from PED users compared to other teams, and the Sox didn't waste any time finding a place to ship that CF once the full testing kicked in.
  6. If this case leads to a wider crackdown on PED use in MLB, it could play to the advantage of the Sox. 2005 was right after the last big increase in steroid testing, and I don't think it's a coincidence that the Sox won 99 games that year.
  7. That is true, though except for Britany Greiner, I believe all of the dunks by women have been two-handed, so ball size doesn't matter in that specific case, but yes, it does affect shooting, ball handling, and the ability to dunk with one hand.
  8. Whether or not somebody enrolled is irrelevant. Once you sign your LOI, the school you signed with stops recruiting whoever their second choice might be to fill that slot, and that guy signs with another school. It puts a uniform end date to the recruiting process so teams can move on with their plans. But if you want to use enrollment as the guideline, then ND can now go find some 4-star guy who signed a LOI with Michigan State and offer Vanderdoes' scholarship to him since he hasn't enrolled at his new school, right? And then Michigan State can now go find some 3-star guy who signed a LOI with Northern Illinois and offer their open scholarship to him since he hasn't enrolled yet, and then Northern Illinois can go find some 2-star guy who signed a LOI with Arkansas State and offer their open scholarship to him since he hasn't enrolled yet.
  9. When I was in college, my dorm's men's rec league soccer team beat the defending NCAA Division I Champion women's team 2-0, and the goalie played out of her ass to keep the score that low.
  10. Yes, DFA means the team has 10 days to trade him or put him on waivers.
  11. I just wonder if Braun's successful appeal made MLB go after this clinic harder, thus outing the other 19 players.
  12. Pretty obvious no Sox hitters are on anything.
  13. Rained out game will be made up Monday 7/8 at 7:10 pm CDT.
  14. My favorite sports quote ever: "I'm here to turn this franchise around 360 degrees."
  15. Doesn't really matter what he though Daniels was going to do--it's irresponsible to give him your paper when you already have a strike against you.
  16. Jake F. Peavy (RHP) 6-3, 3.62 vs Felix A. Hernandez (RHP) 6-4, 2.38
  17. Well, I think the "other off field problems" that somebody else referred to are his teammates giving him a very hard time over this. The situation may work itself out without Kelly having to do anything.
  18. Background: ND's code of academic conduct in the area of academic cheating/fraud calls for automatic failure in the class for the first offense and dismissal from the university with the possibility of being re-admitted after one semester for the second offense. There is no public knowledge of the first offense because student grades and conduct issues are protected due to privacy issues. Now here's the Golson/Daniels story as I've heard it: Golson had a previous offense and as a result failed a class. Then during the spring semester, Daniels asked to "look at" a paper Golson had written for a class. Daniels then copied the paper word for word and turned it in as his own. Golson supposedly didn't know Daniels had done this but it doesn't really matter and it counts as an offense for both of them. Now this is Golson's second offense so he is out of school for at least semester but it's Daniels' first offense so as long as failing that one class doesn't pull his overall GPA below an eligible level, he will still be able to play.
  19. That's a sign that you're an elite program. Nobody re-runs games where the losing team is Penn State, Northwestern, or Iowa.
  20. Dunn has a .633 OPS and is signed through 2014. Konerko has a .661 OPS and is signed through 2013. If you're going to release/trade anybody, Konerko is the first one to go, but like others have said, the Sox don't have any significant talent in the minors that is going to make the Sox better in 2014-16 by getting more playing time in 2013. If you really have an outfielder you want to look at, stick him in LF, let Viciedo DH, and make Konerko/Dunn a 1B platoon.
  21. It's part of the league-wide TV problem. ESPN shows 3-4 games per week. The Yankees and Red Sox get the highest ratings, so they have an incentive to show those two teams as much as possible. The effect is that nobody sees much of the other 28 teams, and when two of those other 28 teams make the World Series, nobody watches it because they don't know anything about those teams (that and the late start times). The problem is, ESPN doesn't show any playoff games so they have absolutely zero incentive to generate interest in the other 28 teams just so TBS and FOX can get better playoff ratings. Fixing the TV situation goes a long way towards fixing all of the other problems. MLB needs to have more control over start times and what teams are being shown on TV, even if it means getting less money. And then all the money, national and local, needs to be split evenly among the 30 teams.
  22. Frank Lautenberg (D), 89, US Senator from New Jersey
  23. Maximizing revenue in the short term isn't always the best long term plan.
  24. I'm a lefty, so at the very least I could be a LOOGY. I could strike Dunn out.
