QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Oct 19, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) Even though he was old for the league didnt Owens basicly make the same jump Chris Young did to AA? If so than what he did in AA just makes me think a lot more of him as our future leadoff man. Difference is, Owens is what 3 years older and even though it was his 1st full season, he should be putting up numbers around that mark (probably a little below) like that at his age for a 2nd round pick. Let's see how he does in Charlotte, a ballpark not as big, before we anoint him our next lead-off man.

Ugh, read this from another msg board I post on, from a Cubs fan; http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.p...287#post4098287

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Oct 19, 2005 -> 01:52 PM) St. Louie had 4K tickets per game and I think their stadium holds quite a few thousand more. In that context, it would appear that our percentage of tickets available was higher. Still 4000 for our fans isn't good enough. Screw the MLB getting who they want to the games etc. Now you can see why the Sox made their season ticket policy with those amount of tickets available.

QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Oct 19, 2005 -> 02:47 PM) Here's the deal, the Hawks got screwed on some penalty calls. BUT they didnt helpp their own cause by taking a few dumb ones. Vorobiev looked good on O, but let his man go wide open to the net and Ohlund scored. They weren't that lazy, it was just a case of the same guys being out there on special teams and they were fatigues. Khabibulin looked average, but that's not good enough for what we paid him for. All the goals were good goals, but for a franchise goalie, I expect some great saves or something. In all, penalties killed the Hawks tonight. From what I've read on BHZ our defensive coverage in our own zone is killing us right now. Add that to no Ruutu (he's got back problems) and no Daizy, suddenly we're not that deep in the forwards and when the d-men aren't contributing like they should, you're gonna have some problems. On Vorobiev though, his play really makes me wanna get Yakubov back over from Russia. Hopefully he does come back at some point in the future though. At least we're pretty loaded with in prospects from the 2004 draft though. Dave Bolland looks like a keeper.

QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Oct 19, 2005 -> 02:36 PM) Poor coaching tonite factored into the loss. The team was stupid tonite, period. How did Khabi look? Not the greatest start for him, but hopefully he'll pick it up. Vancouver away would be one of the hardest road trips in Hockey though. Vorobiev looks like a keeper though, 2 more points tonight.

Anyone see the votes? Suprised it was so close, especially with Macha. The top three Voted on by all 14 AL managers 1. Ozzie Guillen, White Sox (6 votes) 2. Ken Macha, A's (5) 3. Eric Wedge, Indians (2)

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 19, 2005 -> 12:00 PM) Read the last line of the post you quoted. Bill Wirtz helped cost the sport a whole season so he could get the salary cap you mentioned. So were you in favor of the likes of Alexei Yashin still getting huge contracts when they don't deserve it? The financial future of all of the NHL teams is a lot more rosier now with the salary cap.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Oct 12, 2005 -> 05:28 AM) I don't even know who the f*** Pat Burke is. Pat Burke's still in this league? LMAO. He was Orlando's opening day center about 2 or 3 seasons ago, when we had nobody at C. Needless to say, he's a white stiff who can't rebound and will do a little scoring. Poor man's Eddy Curry if there's such a thing.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Oct 14, 2005 -> 03:14 PM) Wrenched open the purse strings? Their payroll in the last active season was 44 million. This years payroll is 28 million while tickets and concessions remain unchanged. s***bags like Wirtz cost the sport a season to serve their own greedy ends. Maybe that has something to do with a thing called the Salary Cap? No way Yawney gets canned. Would you prefer Brian "How many times can I punch Tyler Arnason because he's younger than 30" Sutter back?

Well Tony and everyone else who didn't get tickets, I hope you guys have some luck outside the ballpark if you do go and try and get a ticket. At least the bar's are a good backup plan I suppose.

Bring back Jerry Manuel He deserves it, no matter what people may think of his decisions. Bottom line is, the Sox won 99 games and we're in the world series.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 19, 2005 -> 10:29 AM) Got my live draft for my fantasy basketball league tonight over at my buddies and I'm already exhausted. At one point this week, I'm so taking a nap. Make sure you take Dwight Howard in the 3rd round now (damn you Hammer). :banghead

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 18, 2005 -> 10:59 PM) The original comment was never having anything bad to say about these guys. I just pointed out some fans have short memories and will turn in a heartbeat. I wonder how many people here are "fans" of the company they work for? How much less they would take to work for a company that has showed them loyalty and had great customers who also loved the company? Could you imagine yourself saying "we have the greatest customers in the world, I want to stay here forever! Even if someone offers me a 15 or 20% increase." Yeah I know fans will turn, and that's unfortunate especially when the player's done nothing wrong over his time here. But that's life, fans are passionate for their team and don't want to see their star players deserting them for another. A company and a team in my mind are different. You leave 1 company for another, whether it's in the same industry, it's not the same as say PK leaving the White Sox and taking a huge offer with say the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (which will never happen). Then of course you're moving to another city, and you've got lifestyle issues family etc. to deal with. Alex Rodriguez signed a 10 year 250M deal because he was offered the most money. Eventually it worked out for him because he got traded to the Yanks, but those first few years in Texas weren't good at all for him.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 18, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) You took the words right out of my mouth. This is a genius idea by Brooks and company. The whole key to sustaining the momentum of this franchise isn't making sure we have sellouts for the RedSox/Yankees/Cubs, its making sure we have 25,000 people in the park for Tuesday games against the Royals. They have done an excellent job of trying to tie demand to lesser demand to try to sell more tickets. Yeah it sucks that we might be able to be at the World Series, but would you rather have the Sox in the playoffs more often, or good seats to bad games? Yeah it isn't going to be popular with those people who can't get tickets, and I understand that. But like you and Steff have said, we want this team to be sucessful for a long, long time. Getting butts in seats in the years beyond, and improving those attendances will be a big key in that. JR and the owners have shown that they'll increase payroll every year. We increase attendance even more, that'll keep happening and this team should continue to be good hopefully.
-
There's pros and cons for us facing either team. But like Critic and Kap, I'd probably prefer St. Louis. You don't have to face the 3 headed monster, and although Carpenter has been great all year, I would like our chances against the likes of Mulder, Suppan etc. We've just got to keep the likes of Pujols in check and hope he has a Vladdy like series (and wow wasn't he bad).

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 18, 2005 -> 10:47 PM) Yes, they could take second or third place money in the auction for their services. But when they don't, we turn on them like any other player. This euphoria will be long forgotten. That was my point. They will suck just like Belle, Colon, Maggs, etc. You've got to remember with Colon JR offered him the highest deal ever for a Sox pitcher in franchise history. He decided to bolt to Anaheim, his choice. I don't see anyone really bashing him about why he did that (although yes the old Tub Of Goo jokes did suddenly come to mind). Maggs was different. He rejected our 5 year deal, and got insanely lucky from an insane owner in the FA market. Konerko could get 4 years 50M very easily like Richie Sexson did, and he probably deserves to, he's got a proven track record of 40HR/100RBI's over the past 2 seasons. But loyalty still exists in baseball (it helps if Scott Bora$$ ain't your agent). Let's hope Konerko sees how good the Sox have been to him, how they stuck by him after 2003 when he very well could have been traded, and how we're a great team now, with a fantastic pitching staff, and he'll take a little less to stick around. Personally, if Paul Konerko leaves, I don't know about other Sox fans because I know mid - season at least 2/3rd's of the people here wanted him out just because of his measly BA/RISP (my oh my how that's turned around), but I won't have 1 bad thing to say about him at all.
-
QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 18, 2005 -> 10:33 PM) I am certain you, and many others are saying this. Sadly, Konerko will be a greedy bum and a s***ty player when he signs a bigger contract elsewhere. Crede and Boras will leave and piss off Sox fans for not being "loyal". It always happens, it is a part of being a Sox fan. Rare is the Sox player who leaves on his own accord and isn't slammed for doing so. C'mon Tex, Crede could easily fire Boras like Uribe did so he can sign a good 3 year deal to stick around after what he's done to the post-season. And I know everyone thinks Konerko is a goner. Everyone thinks he's going to Boston. He has said he doesn't want to go to Boston, he doesn't think he could live there. We're going to make at least an extra $10M from the revenue alone from this fantastic playoff run. With Thomas and Everett's contract's comning off the books, payroll could be up to the 80M mark quite easily. We'll have the money to get Konerko re-uped, even with the re-signings of A.J and JG in my mind. You've got to remember with Konerko, he's the clubhouse leader. Ozzie and KW have repeadtly said how important leadership and a good morale in the clubhouse is. PK is a key to that.

One of buddies down here is a big Cards fan. I told him tonight that he was lucky to have Albert Pujols. Very lucky. He laughed pretty hard at that.

Bagwell had splits of .300/.423/.450 against lefties this season. But he's also got a -.34 differential for his BA in night games. But we'll have to be careful with him if the Stros do indeed make it.
