Cormac McCarthy's "The Road." As I explained within the catch everything thread, ignore everything you may associate with Oprah's book club and her often estrogen induced selections. This book is about a father and soon traveling south across a post-apocalyptic American landscape.

So much for sore arm, Verlander just hit 100

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 09:51 PM) Jose and Buehrle both started out hot last year and fizzled towards the end. But no matter what Detroit does, we shouldnt' be just counting on them to be worse. Unfortunately, many people seem to have adopted this view that the Tigers' pitching staff is due for a substantial dropoff because everyone pitched above expectations; both statistically and concerning innings pitched. Ignoring the fact Bonderman and Verlander are both 24, Maroth actually appeared to have turned himself around prior to injury, and a little pitcher named Andrew Miller awaiting in the minor leagues. -
I know the White Sox have been struggling the first two games of the year, but truthfully, did anyone question whether we'd win? Hell, even if the ball didn't hit him (which I'm fairly sure it did) I believe the count would have been 3-1. Bases loaded, 0 outs, even a team stifled by Jeremy Sowers for six innings could have managed to scratch across one run from the immortal Roberto Hernandez.

Great selection. I'm surprised Chris responded so quickly. Good to see he is atleast honest when answering quesitons; ideally the last and whether he is a Tigers fan. It'll be interesting to see what Getz' future within this organization is if Iguchi is signed longterm after the season concludes. If this were to occur, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea for him to try and field several other infield positions. He'd be up in 2009 as a UTL INF, without question.

So much for the "last years workload, including the playoffs, will effect his arm" theory. -
I know enough about baseball to where I don't need announcers describing the various intricacies within a game. A typical announcer exists to educate the casual fan -- who makes up a majority of the viewing audience -- rather than those who've followed the ballclub for numerous years and spend countless hours on an internet message board. I'm a fan of Hawk. What annoys me, however, is just the spin he puts on a situation whenever something doesn't go the White Sox way. I just don't believe many realize how much they'll miss him when he's no longer announcing games. I can't imagine a game not announced by Hawk, yet, the sad reality is one day it'll happen. Even through the blatant homerism I don't take his presence for granted. He's unique and one-of-a-kid. As others have said, take advantage of the free MLB package on digital cable and pay attention to the announcers of other teams. Everyone sounds the same. One bland color commentator after another.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) hey flash, kinda OT... but you really should add Massett to that McCarthy/Danks watch, IMO. Will do.

Daisuke undoubtedly has quality stuff, but judging from highlights earlier the umpires sure gave him a generous strike zone.

QUOTE(beautox @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 04:46 PM) we could've really used hager these past 3 games, our BP is taxed. Exactly. I'm worried about our bullpen, than Buehrle, considering the six straight games upcoming. If Danks doesn't pitch atleast five innings, we may be in trouble. You can't reasonably throw Masset out. Any reliever going two innings can't be used the following game. Just imagine if someone pulls a Contreras within the next several days, and we're without an off-day to regroup. /shudders QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) I don't think that's what I was saying at all. If both Buehrle and Floyd pitch today, that means if we need someone to pitch the next time Buehrle's spot in the rotation comes up, Floyd would be on 4 days rest, aka normal rest, that day. So Floyd would not be on short rest, but its entirely possible Charlie would be either on extra-long rest or short rest if he had to take over Buehrle's spot, since Charlie is probably penciled in to pitch tomorrow. My fault, Balta. You're right. I'm definitely losing some sort of grasp with reality, here. Guess that's what 2 hours of sleep will do to you. When I quoted your initial post, in which Floyd was specifically mentioned as the opening day starter, I somehow interpreted it as Haeger starting opening day. I suppose the issue here is when Haeger will start, whether they'll hold him back, or if they'll go with the logical choice (atleast considering normal rest) and go with Floyd.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 04:45 PM) There's more to it than that...Floyd is scheduled to pitch the charlotte opener tonight. That'd put him pitching the same day as Buehrle is scheduled to go next week as well. Not sure when Charlie threw last, but it's possible that for 1 start, shifting that many people around wouldn't be the best idea. You're only further validating Haeger by suggesting his next start will coincide with Buehrle's. Unless Floyd will be held back all together from starting these next several days, it wouldn't be too smart to have him travel to Chicago on short rest. I wouldn't be concerned about when he threw last, either. Consider the fluid motion of a knuckleballer. If the White Sox are willing to have Masset pitch four innings this afternoon after throwing three several days ago, Charlie's throwing schedule shouldn't be an issue. Perhaps Masset will have the spot start. I'm sure this is what you were insinuating by suggesting a move may 'shift people around.' It's possible he will be selected, but then you have to hope beyond hope the starters throw 6+ innings the next four games. Then several games after Masset's start.
-
If the White Sox are precautious with Buehrle and he misses a start, I expect Haeger to be called up first. Selecting Floyd proves Williams is intent on pushing his acquisition ahead of the better pitcher.
-
Encouraging win. I'm not too thrilled about the lack of effort against Sowers, but as everyone knows (or should know), we'll only go as far as the pitching. A wins a win -- although 4-3 victories are more encouraging than 10-9 games. Masset did well. I don't think we'll see him pitching for quite awhile.

I just have to assume we'll win this game. 2 men on, 0 outs -- they can't possibly screw this up against Ol' Man Hernandez. Right? -

Pinch Run for Dye, NOW. -
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 06:49 PM) Your sig is misleading by saying 3 runs (2 UER.) That means he has given up 1 ER. ...and are you not keeping track of K's now? Which should suggest poor math, not an attempt to disguise McCarthy's performance. Strikeouts are represented. He just didn't have any. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 07:06 PM) So you won't stop updating if the numbers aren't in the favor of your argument? Yes. I'm sure people will call me out if I do.
-
QUOTE(danman31 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 06:43 PM) Good to see you aren't going to be biased in keeping track of stats though...he's given up 5 runs, 3 ER. You separated the categories conveniently. An unearned run is still a run. Actually, I didn't even notice the mistake. There's no alterior motive, here.

You know, we shouldn't be criticizing Podsednik. The courage and determination he has shown teammates by returning several weeks early from offseason surgery only validates his dedication to winning. Give him several months. Just keep in mind he may not be 100%. The cold weather is probably effecting his game.
-
If anyone is looking to vicariously blame Podsednik for our loss, when he was caught stealing second base off the noodle-arm of Martinez there were several straight hits afterwards. We lost by one run. CUT HIS ASS, NOwZERS!!!!
-
Now, lets see whether Danks matches that. Time to update the McCarthy/Danks watch.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) We can beat Sowers. If he ends up dominating us this season, then we have zero chance to win this division with all the other Sox killers in our division on the mound 6 times. It's possible; his "stuff" isn't comparable to other lefties within the division. However, he can locate pitches. If we're unable to adjust, it won't be very pretty. -

I can't wait until minnesota comes into town. We look absolutely pitiful , and guess what -- tomorrow we're facing the quintessential Sox killer in Jeremy Sowers. It could be a sweep. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Apr 4, 2007 -> 03:48 PM) Tell me he could not reach that with a dive? I thought the same thing. Perhaps Hawk was right in noticing something with his side going to the dugout. This game, unbelievably, is matching the ugliness of opening day pitch for pitch.
