    Job Hunt Thread

QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ May 30, 2012 -> 09:04 PM) Life isn't the worst thing in the world, I have many friends, a college degree, a good family and recently have begun dating a wonderful girl. What is missing is fulfillment and being paid for the work I do. The entire source of the problem is the fear of going down the wrong path which is why I haven't picked anything. But I'll quit worrying and just try to pull a 180 and be more positive. It's going to be tough but it's necessary to have joy in all parts of life. That said, maybe it's time to play to my strengths and start talking to people to figure out if the jobs I am thinking of or an advanced degree is necessary. And you're right, that is the entire source of the problem - so fix it. You've been saying the same thing for like 3 years now. Pick a job that has a decent prospect and roll the dice. I've been with the same company since I graduated (4 years). I've had 3 different roles in 3 different sectors of the company and am now in a role I love. I got here by making the right connections internally, working my ass off on projects assigned to me and being open with all of my supervisors and coworkers on where I want to end up. I would have NEVER imagined I'd be where I am now when I started with this company. If you're easy to work with and do good work, people notice and will work with you to get you in the right places. At least that's my experience.
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 29, 2012 -> 08:50 AM) Hawk actually seemed revitalized with Wimpy. I was loving that yesterday. I definitely noticed that too. It was a fun listen.
  4. QUOTE (farmteam @ May 14, 2012 -> 02:44 PM) 65 for me. It was weird and a bit depressing, but at the same time I was ready to start something new. Four years was the perfect amount of time to be there, basically. That's the way I felt after I graduated. Damn, it was fun, but I was ready for something new.
  5. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 12, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) 3 of my buddies and I got our credit and backgrounds approved today to move into a place in Chicago in mid June. First time I'm going to be living in the city. So pumped! It obviously wasn't that thorough of a background check....
  6. Just put him on the DL - this accomplishes nothing.
  7. as DJ would say, "great googly moogly"
  8. In my best hawk impression, "I loooove your gamethreads"
  9. If the bears draft Mercilus, I'm immediately buying that jersey.
  10. QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 10:28 PM) Gotta love vintage ad sexism! That was quite entertaining.
  11. Ha, I thought the same thing about grandstand when I first walked in. They're going to get crushed. The store is beautiful and has TONS of cool stuff, but as others mentioned, it's just too pricey. You can find the same stuff for cheaper online.
  12. I'm closing on a house this week w/ a backyard the size of a football field. I'm pumped about it, but also a little frightened about how much work it might be.
  13. QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 07:24 AM) Since they only sell New Glarus beers in Wisconsin, sometimes I make the 40 minute trip to Hudson to buy some. Tasty. Two Women Lager is also good. Smoothest beer I've ever had.

    2012 Book Thread

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 12:35 AM) "The Art Of Fielding" is one weird book. I'm halfway through, damn entertaining. But you're right, definitely weird. There's been a few chapters where after you're done, you have to figure out how you got there.

    Masters

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 12, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) I'm in. Finally decided for English and against Psychology. (BA in both). I'm trying to decide between Comp and Rhetoric (better for what is left of my career) or Literature, where my interests push me. I am also trying to decide between thesis and not. One of my professors thinks it should be a slam dunk for me, thesis and comp, follow what I am good at and where I could carve our a 15-20 year career. (If I want to work that much longer). Another said lit for about the same reasons. Believing I could rise high enough in a more crowded field to build a career. I am also concerned about the course load and working lots of hours. Just how much harder are grad classes compared to undergrad? Thoughts? I've actually found my grad classes a bit easier than undergrad. I feel like the classes are more focused and concise. On the other hand, I may have just grown up a bit since undergrad and can focus more. All of my classes have been a different level of work, but they've ranged from 1/2 hour - 3 hours/week of extracurricular work/studying. (masters of accountancy)

    I came up w/ 11-12 also.
  17. QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 25, 2012 -> 01:12 PM) I fill out everything on the check for the grocery store, except the cost, before I get out of my car. So there is less time for someone to see me writing a check. c'mon now - there is NO reason to write a check at a grocery store. A check to someone else? fine A check to pay some bills? fine A check at a grocery store = you better not be younger than 70 and pulling that.

    2012 Films Thread

QUOTE (danman31 @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 11:08 AM) It was very superficial with the characters. I was also expecting the love story to be more prominent. It's barely a factor until the final 30-40 minutes. Unsurprisingly generic, predictable story. That's where I'm at with it. It was a good interpretation of the book, but it was lacking a ton of depth. I guess that's the case for most "book" movies, but it seemed to really just skim the surface of the story and emotions.
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 23, 2012 -> 09:39 AM) State of Pennsylvania vs. Italian Cruise Ship Captains in the final I can't believe People who still Write Checks made it to the Vile 4. Some things you just have to write a check for, WTF? I still see plenty of people writing checks at the grocery store.

    QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 20, 2012 -> 09:49 AM) I assume this was a torrent? I'd love to read these things, but don't feel like dropping $1.99/comic (times 88 or something) http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compend...e/dp/1607060760 Here's 1-48

    2012 TV Thread

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 19, 2012 -> 08:04 AM) (8) Props to my wife for calling the "we're all infected and Rick knew it from his talk with the CDC guy" 2 episodes ago. (also, why was that such a big deal that Rick didn't tell people? I mean yeah, I would have been mildly annoyed, but it's not like it would change anything.) There were 2 things that really stuck out me last night. One was #8 above, I really couldn't rationalize why the infection news was such a big deal. It literally changes nothing. The other was the ridiculous Lori incident that's been mentioned. Her reaction made 0 sense. Compared to most of this season, it was a damn entertaining episode. Saying that, I can't shake the feeling that it was a bit of a wasted season. Nothing really happened. Having michonne show up w/ her tied up zombies was fantastic though. Even if they just follow the bare bones plot of the comic book, next season has the potential to be amazing.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 15, 2012 -> 09:11 AM) I know I'm super late to the party, but I watched seasons 1 & 2 of Weeds this week while travelling. That's a damn entertaining show, looking forward to watching more. the show takes a deep dive after the second season. Saying that, the chick doesn't get any less hot.
  23. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Mar 9, 2012 -> 12:52 AM) Anybody else having trouble with Firefox crashing a lot lately? Mine was crashing several times daily over the past couple months. That's when I finally made the switch to chrome.
