8/16 Game Thread: White Sox @ Cubs 7:05CT

Bummer has been bad for more than just this season...naturally Hahn gave him a big contract. ? -
Let's take the Sox front office at face value when they say they are going to be competitive next year. (That doesn't even mean by the way that they'll even have a winning record...) OK...to be "competitive" this is what they appear to need: Catcher 2nd base Right Field at least 2 starting pitchers 3 bullpen arms A closer Maybe a new shortstop Now how anybody thinks they can do this with a reduced payroll and a mediocre/poor farm system is beyond my limited intelligence. But that's what they are going to try to continue to sell the fan base...that and "hoping" things work out. Odds are really, really, really small of that happening.

Santos fits right in with the other bullpen buffoons. ? 16th time this season...16, the Sox took a lead into the 7th inning or later and lost the game. 16 7th time they lost the lead in the 9th inning. Only in the world of the White Sox. -
He seems to fit right in with the organization at all levels. A world of talent but can't stay on the field consistently.

August 16, 1927 - The Yankees “Babe” Ruth hit the first rooftop home run in Comiskey Park history when he blasted a shot off Tommy Thomas. The ball was estimated to have gone 474 feet. The Yankees won 8-1. Ruth’s home run came in the fifth inning and was a solo shot. Former White Sox manager Clarence “Pants” Rowland was the first base umpire in this game. August 16, 2011 - In an 8-7, 14 inning win over the Indians at U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox hit five triples. That was the most in a single game since September 17, 1920 when they got six against the Yankees. Alejandro DeAza had two and Alexei Ramirez, Tyler Flowers and Alex Rios got the other three. The Sox won the game on a Juan Pierre single in the last of the 14th inning. August 16, 2017 – Sox outfielder Leury Garcia homered on the first pitch of the game at Dodger Stadium off Yu Darvish. It marked the second straight game, the Sox leadoff man homered on the game’s first delivery. The night before shortstop Tim Anderson did it off Alex Wood. It was the first time this ever happened in franchise history. August 16, 2020 – On this day the White Sox tied the Major League record by hitting four consecutive home runs. It came in the fifth inning at home against the Cardinals and pitcher Roel Ramirez. The four home runs were hit by Yoan Moncada, Yasmani Grandal, Jose Abreu and Eloy Jimenez. It was the second time in franchise history the White Sox had hit four straight homers. This feat last took place on August 14, 2008, against the Royals, when Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez and Juan Uribe did the honors. The Sox would win the game 7-2. It marked the 10th time a team had hit four straight home runs in a game. It was also the first time in MLB history that three Cuban-born players (in this case Moncada, Grandal and Abreu) went back-to-back-to-back, or that four Latin-born players had homered consecutively.

Keynan Middleton rips White Sox 'no rules' culture
Lip Man 1 replied to maxjusttyped's topic in Pale Hose Talk
"You can’t have good clubhouse chemistry with self-serving players like Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly and Kendall Graveman backstabbing their teammates along the way and pretending they weren’t part of the problem. If any of the current Sox pitchers still revere their former teammates, perhaps the clubhouse chemistry is doomed to fail again in ’24." - Paul Sullivan Chicago Tribune 8/16 Sounds like there is more to this situation than has become public -
Cubs fans, even kids, are all "class": "A young fan wearing a Cubs jersey in the first rows behind the on-deck circle showed Robert a finger and not his pinky. Robert took his index finger to his lips as if to silence him." $75M = One of the worst White Sox LF Seasons
Lip Man 1 replied to South Side Hit Men's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I can tell you the shareholders haven't lost money and made money on their investment. -
Would love to see him fired but unless Kenny and Hahn go with him it will not be happening. They won't admit they blew another crucial decision.

Jeff Loria goes after Mark Buehrle, Jeter, others

Loria has the distinction of ruining two big league franchises. -
His ERA is around 16 so far at Birmingham. He's a few years away.

August 15, 1922 - In front of 2,500 fans at Fenway Park, the White Sox and Red Sox set an A.L. record with 35 singles in a 19-11 Chicago win. The White Sox had 21 of the one-baggers, Boston 14. The two clubs combined for 43 hits total (25 Chicago, 18 Boston) and were a combined 23-of-39 with runners in scoring position. Eddie Mulligan and Earl Sheely led the club with three singles apiece (Sheely added a double). The White Sox actually trailed this one, 10-8, after Boston put up a seven run sixth inning. But the South Siders scored 11 in the final three frames, including their own seven spot in the ninth, to put the game away. Ted Blankenship wound up getting the win in relief with Urban “Red” Faber picking up the save. August 15, 1973 - G. M. Roland Hemond acquired starting pitcher Jim Kaat on waivers from Minnesota. All “Kitty” did was become a two-time 20 game winner for the Sox in 1974 and 1975. He made the All-Star Team in 1975 and won 45 games in two and a quarter years in Chicago. August 15, 1996 - White Sox first round draft pick Bobby Seay was declared a free agent because the team failed to offer a formal contract within 15 days of the draft. He was reportedly asking for a two million dollar signing bonus which would have been a record for the time and refused to negotiate with Sox G.M. Ron Schueler when he flew down to see him in Florida telling him to talk with his agent Scott Boras. The southpaw became the first player in the 32 years of the draft to become a free agent in the same summer he was selected. Seay signed with Tampa Bay in November for around three million dollars and made his MLB debut six years later.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Thornton, Quentin and Eaton were not waived by their former clubs, the Sox acquired them in trades. Not the same as a first round draft pick being so bad they were simply released by the organization.
-
And we of course have seen how often the Sox are able to rescue failed talent in the past with this front office. Can probably count the number of times on one hand. The fact is these former first round draft picks wouldn't be available in the first place if they were any good.
-
Just an adjustment: "He's bringing in a lot of former failed top draft picks..."
-
They actually signed over 75 NHL players that first season. I was a big Chicago Cougars fan. The WHA deliberately targeted Boston and Chicago because they knew those owners were particularly unwilling to spend money on player salary.
-
Just a few points: Wirtz didn't trade Bobby. Bobby signed a one million dollar deal with Winnipeg of the WHA. Wirtz wouldn't come close to matching that salary figure. Halas traded Ditka to the Eagles.

August 14, 1910 - The Sox celebrated the first sellout in team history at Comiskey Park when over 26 thousand fans poured in to see a double header split against the New York Highlanders (Yankees.) August 14, 1915 - The Sox purchased the contract of pitcher Claude “Lefty” Williams from Salt Lake City of the Pacific Coast League. Williams might have been inducted into the Hall of Fame for his abilities if not for the 1919 “Black Sox” incident. In his four seasons he’d go 81-44 for the White Sox. Twice winning over 20 games. August 14, 1919 - Center fielder Oscar “Happy” Felsch tied a Major League record by recording four outfield assists in a 15-6 loss to the Red Sox at Comiskey Park. In that same season, Felsch ended up setting a record for outfielder double plays in a season, with 15. August 14, 1939 – It was the first time a Major League night game was played in Chicago with the Sox besting the St. Louis Browns 5-2. Johnny Rigney got the complete game win with 10 strikeouts before 30 thousand fans. After he retired Rigney would eventually become a vice president with the team. August 14, 1983 - Catcher Carlton Fisk appeared to hit a go ahead home run in the fifth inning off the Orioles Scott McGregor only to have home plate umpire Jim Evans overrule third base umpire Greg Kosc and say it was a ground rule double. The decision was based on the impression that a fan appeared to have leaned over the wall to catch it. The Sox wound up losing 2-1. That fan then called Jimmy Piersall’s radio show afterwards to give his side of the story. TV replays showed he was not leaning over the wall when he caught the ball. Manager Tony LaRussa went ballistic…arguing, kicking dirt, then taking the third base bag out of its position and flinging it towards the Sox dugout. Naturally he was thrown out for it. Just another in a series of bizarre plays that took place against Baltimore down through the years. August 14, 2008 - White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin set the Major League record when he was hit by a pitch for the sixth consecutive game. Quentin would get hit 20 times in the 2008 season. August 14, 2008 - In a 9-2 win over the Royals at U.S. Cellular Field, the Sox would hit four consecutive home runs for the first time in franchise history. The four came in a six run, sixth inning and were hit by Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez and Juan Uribe in order after two were out. It was the sixth time in Major League history a team hit four home runs in a row at the time.

Not happening with Pedro but the good news is the Sox laying down and dying to the Brewers kept them in first place and screwed the Cubs.
-
Since no one expects either Kenny or Hahn to get fired (or retire or resign) you think they are going to fire Pedro after only one year and basically admit to the world that they screwed up big time yet again? Not happening.
