  1. And this dramatically changes the dynamic for the off season. Conventional wisdom was suggesting the Sox would issue a statement saying something along the lines of, "it was mutually agreed that Robin would not be returning. He wanted to spend more time with his family." (or some other face saving statement.) Now that Robin has publicly said he'd be willing to return, that blows that scenario right out of the water. If the Sox let him go the onus is put completely on them, they made that decision...not Robin. Mark
  2. Normally I'd say he's got a snowball's chance in hell of returning. But these are the White Sox remember. Expect the unexpected with them. Mark
  3. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 07:35 PM) People who are typically hired to manage actually have managerial experience in the minors and they have learned their craft. Randomly taking former superstars and just giving them the job gets us exactly into the same position we are in today. If Frank Thomas wants to spend some time in the minors learning how to manage than so be it. Same thing with things like pitching coach and hitting coach. Just because you did something as a player doesn't mean you can teach it or coach it. Some of the best managers have been some of the worst major leaguers or never made it to the majors. Exactly! Enough of this cronyism. Go out and hire a manager with previous experience at least at the minor league level and with NO connection, repeat NONE to the White Sox. Part of the issue is a fresh set of eyes and a new set of ideas is desperately needed. As far as the game is concerned all I can say is...James Shields. Sigh. Mark
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 12:19 PM) Sox really screwed up after 2005. It looked like the Sox would own the city of Chicago and own that division. Instead the team almost immediately became a nonreactor in the division and now is the laughingstock of Chicago. Pretty strange how the Sox didn't build on winning. They got complacent and it's been a steady, sad decline since a WS title that should have started years of dominance in a pathetic division full of small market teams. Agree with this, but 2005 wasn't the first time. The Sox had a nice run 81-83 capping by winning the division and didn't capitalize. They had a better run 1990 through 94 with a new ballpark to boot but they couldn't capitalize, JR's hard line approach helping to force the labor impasse and neuter his own teams chances didn't help matters. 5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 12:20 AM) Only the Oakland A's and Rays would seem to be in trouble (for different reasons). The jury's still out on Miami (with Stanton and Fernandez they have two headliners) and Cleveland's in an improved position this year and going forward. One big decision that will impact the White Sox will be whether the Cubs start their own independent network or not. If it's only Comcast bidding for the Sox and Cubs simultaneously, we know which team will get squeezed. Realistically, this offseason would be the perfect time to start that mini-rebuild because they can immediately inject a ton of life with AA and AAA position prospects within a year or so of the majors. It might even mean taking another risk and selling high on Eaton while waiting on Abreu. But that would probably require a new owner's determination to "peak" in 2019 instead of rolling the dice again in 2017. The other major consideration is timing that huge free agent class after 2018 with being the "final pieces" to having a really good team in 2019. Of course, waiting another two years will be hard, but at least there'd be a bigger payoff in the end than fielding .500 teams the next three seasons and/or losing Q, Sale or Rodon to injury. Craig Kenney has already publicly stated the Cubs are starting their own network in 2019. I suspect it will net them money we can't even imagine, especially if they reamin one of the best teams in baseball over the next few seasons. Mark
  6. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 04:55 PM) JR settled for the present site after Addison/Dupage County didn't workout. If he would have accepted the South Loop site that was offered to him at the start of looking for a new stadium by the City of Chicago, The White Sox would have been playing in the South Loop these last 25 years. He rejected the South loop site because he wanted to have the stadium built in Addison on land that he owned. He also left Sarasota Florida where the White Sox had their spring training for many years. He moved them to Arizona and had them playing in a stadium on land that he owned. If memory serves I believe the Addison vote was lost by a single vote against. Mark
  7. Don't think Avila will be back this season. Third time he's tweeked that hamstring since it was originally hurt. Probably for the best, he's not good anyway. Mark
  8. Nice to get the win but Jacob Turner is bad...very, VERY bad. His rear end needs to be cut as soon as the season is over. Mark
  9. Many years ago Cuban in an interview said he grew up a Pirates fan and that if he had a chance to get any MLB team it would be them. That club was / is his first love. Doesn't mean he wouldn't do a great job if he got a different team but as others have posted MLB owners want no part of him given that he could go off and have a 200 million dollar payroll in an effort to win. Mark
  10. August 11, 1991 - In only his second major league start, the Sox Wilson Alvarez tossed a no-hitter against the Orioles in Baltimore. Alvarez was handed a big lead early on and made the most of it, shutting down the Birds. Lance “One Dog” Johnson made a saving catch in right center field late in the game as Alvarez had his greatest moment in winning 7-0. We've got a pair of audio cuts from this game which can be found here towards the end of the items listed. (It was a busy day in Sox history! LOL). The first is Johnson's catch to save the no-hitter and the second is the final out in it. Announcer: Wayne Hagin. 11. Additional stat: Sox have now scored three runs or less in 54 of 114 games played. 47%. Doesn't matter who they bring in, doesn't matter what team they come from, a culture of losing has now gripped this organization. Nothing changes until major changes are made on the baseball side of the front office and in the philosophy of the organization. Mark
  12. 15th loss this season when the Sox allowed an opponent three runs or less. Mark
  13. uote name='kitekrazy' date='Aug 11, 2016 -> 08:44 PM' post='3415870'] Yet Cooper gets a free pass from the fan base. Not from the entire fan base. Mark
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 02:27 PM) Yeah its all puppy dogs and candy canes until the bidder is from out of town Why...out of town ownership doesn't mean the team is going anywhere. Mark
  15. If you are "going for it," you start by hiring a competent manager and let him pick his own staff. Mark
  16. Nate Jones is not a closer folks (neither is Robertson). Something about Kansas City and the Sox bullpen isn't there? Fourth game THIS SEASON the Sox led K.C. in the 7th inning or later...and lost. Mark
  17. Once again Sale pitches well only to get nothing because of a s***ty bullpen. he has got to be totally frustrated. Mark
  18. Didn't see this posted. Read a few days ago a story where they quoted Robin as saying Avila reinjured that hamstring while running. No idea now when or if he'll be back this season. I suspect he won't be around next year with the club since he'll have missed roughly half the season if the doesn't return. Mark
  19. How has he looked so far in the minor leagues? I thought I saw where at first he was struggling. Mark
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 02:14 PM) Yep. 34k per year after 43 days of service. A lot of folks could live decently on 34 thousand a year for the rest of their lives for 43 days of service. Didn't realize it was that good. I thought at one time it was four years service before you could qualify, I guess that was bargained to what it is now in deals between the owners and the MLBPA. Mark
  21. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 01:27 PM) Well it provides plenty of excuses for the front office come the offseason. Very good point and something that I'm concerned they are going to do. Injuries made their impact this year to be sure but realistically the team was headed into the toilet before they became an epidemic in my opinion. Mark
  22. All you can do is laugh. Injuries never ending... not that it really matters at this point. The Chicago White Sox the team the baseball gods laugh at. Mark
  23. A rare item. August 7, 1974 - Comiskey Park was the site for one of the most exciting games of the early 1970’s and it involved Nolan Ryan. The flamethrower took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Sox and led 1-0 thanks to a Frank Robinson home run. After getting the first out in the inning however it all fell apart for him. Dick Allen beat out an infield hit spoiling the no-hitter and Carlos May reached on an error. Ken Henderson ripped a single to center to tie the game and then with two out, Billy Sharp singled to right to win it. The Sox beat the Angels 2-1 getting all three of their hits in the final inning. I actually have the entire last of the 9th inning TV broadcast which considering the age looks very good and condensed down part of it for the audio for this clip. It can be found about halfway down here: http://www.chicagonow.com/soxnet/2016/08/t...-white-machine/ Announcer is Harry Caray. Courtesy: WSNS-TV. Mark
  24. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 7, 2016 -> 06:56 PM) 9 of those 36 years, or 25% of his time as owner, the Sox have won 90 or more games. That figure is wrong. The Sox won 90+ games under JR six times: 1983, 1990, 1993, 2000, 2005, 2006. Mark
