Does Abreu fit into Sox longer term plans?
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 29, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) I wouldn't trade Abreu unless some kind of package comes along where we almost can't say no. Something like a top 20 prospect plus others. Avi, on the other hand, as much as I love what he's done this year, I would consider moving. Not just for anything, but I wonder if he could be packaged with something like Fulmer to get Giancarlo Stanton + $30-40 million. Avi and Fulmer for Stanton and cash sounds great, but I feel like Miami would get a slightly better offer somewhere else. Maybe if we included someone like Adolfo or Stephens (somebody who's a decent prospect and blocked but not top tier), it could get done

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2017 -> 03:11 PM) If you want to put Collins into the upper tier of our prospects, I want to see more hitting. The guy is supposed to be a hit first catcher and hasn't really hit at all yet. I feel like you may be missing the point. He's a catcher- that's a position where you usually don't get any offensive production. If he can be a high OBP, HR guy with average defense like the scouts think he can, he's already a top-10, maybe even top-5, catcher in all of baseball. That alone makes him a great prospect.

The Reinvention of James Shields
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 04:29 PM) Yeah but I'm not a big fan on how they calculate clutch, because they're comparing how a player performs in high leverage situations to his baseline performance. All the top "unclutch" seasons of all time are great hitters, and it makes sense that their performance would be worse in high leverage situations because opposing managers are going to be using their best relievers against them, whereas a manager might leave in a tired starter for one more batter if Alcides Escobar was at the plate. Judge's batting line in high leverage situations this year is .234/.345/.489, which is a big step down from his overall line but still pretty good. Meanwhile a guy like Kole Calhoun is batting .227/.368/.364 in high leverage situations and he has the 8th best clutch rating in baseball this year. Doesn't make much sense. It also doesn't help that the average amount of PA for players in high leverage situations per year is ~50-60 PA, which is just too small of a sample size. Adding or subtracting 1 or 2 HR from that sample would drastically alter the numbers. Well said. It's simply a stat that cannot be measured accurately, and anyone who tells you otherwise is dreaming.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Sep 25, 2017 -> 01:01 PM) Jose Abreu, the poster, not the player stated that it doesn't matter how many bases you steal, but how many times you get caught stealing. My point was that it the ratio that matters. That both numbers factor in to it. Sorry if my point did not get across. That's not exactly what I meant but I see how it could've come off that way. I read in Keith Law's book that anyone who can steal bases at a 71% clip or better is most likely helping his team, so at that point, I'm all for stolen bases. If you're 2015 Avisail Garcia, though, my position changes.
-
Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
It's not about how many bases you steal, it's about how often you're caught stealing. You can steal 40 bases all you want, but if you're caught 20 times, you're hurting the team.

QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Sep 24, 2017 -> 09:23 AM) Stolen bases are overrated as a stat. They're nice, but an out is a lot of risk. I agree. I recall the break-even percentage of stolen bases being a net negative or positive was something like 71%. I do think Moncada can be a high efficiency base stealer though- take Anderson but with more attempts (hopefully)
