  1. I agree but I don't follow the $5 Mil. Do you think he would get $5 in arbitration? Brock Holt is a FA in 2020, plays IF/OF and he makes $3. I think 3-3.5 is going rate for a 1.5ish utility guy.
  2. I think the problem was Ventura never coached. Now Aaron Boone didn't either but he is doing pretty well. Then again, look at the roster he has to work with. Cora in Boston and Baldelli in Minny served as coaches and both were surrounded w experienced guys around them.
  3. Terry Francona is another guy who failed in his first job in Philly and then won 2 World Series in Boston. That is why I said they have to examine how good they think Omar is. Using your standard of lack of success in a MLB job, how do you judge minor league coaching? Omar has had 2 losing seasons in AA. But that to me means nothing. When the time comes, it will be interesting to see how much analytics plays into the guy chosen. If the Sox FO is gung ho w numbers then they will need a numbers guy in the dugout. If not, they will need an old-school manager.
  4. We have had back to back inexperienced MLB managers. So unless Omar is thought to be someone special I would hope they go for experience
  5. Just a thought. I think on most teams, he can be the CF if both sides think that is best. He is only in RF because Bradley is better. But I don't think it happens either. I think he stays in Boston or gets traded this winter for a big package.
  6. I think Boston will not offer JD if he opts out because he most likely will only be a DH going forward and they will apply his money to the Betts offer. My concern for the White Sox is Boras is the agent and he will drag this out till ST like he did when JD signed w Boston as well as Harper w Philly. JD has supposedly been a major influenece in their clubhouse which Boras will counter the age issue with. He would be great w our young bats. Betts is extremely popular in Boston and is close w Cora. Unless he has a "destination" in mind, I think he resigns w Boston. But there will be a new GM going forward so you never know.

I have seen numerous posters say we should go after JD Martinez. Same age and both a liabilty in the field. JD has better numbers (in a better lineup )but Jose will be a good amount cheaper.
  8. Yes, he was around during the LaRussa years. Ironically DD hired Tony as a special assistant in Boston. Not sure his job will survive now that DD is gone.
  9. Living in New England for part of the season, I wouldn't want DD. He pulled the right strings last year and they won it all. But he went into this season with a limited bullpen and the when injuries hit their starters the pitching imploded. Again at the deadline he passed again on adding to their pen. Now maybe management limited his spending but they did fire him so it would appear they also blamed him. There were rumors Cora was not happy they didn't get reinforcements.

Jose has vaulted past Devers and opened up a lead in the AL RBI race. He has set a new career RBI record which he will keep adding to. Combined with TA's AL leading BA, we have seen some outstanding individual offensive performances this season.
  11. Robin had none. Renteria had a year!!!. Next guy will have 2 years.
  12. Which is kind of strange. Where many pitchers arms start to die by August,, he seems to get better.
  13. RR has that crystal ball working......................
  14. Besides both runners screwing up, where was the 3rd base coach???
  15. He has certainly lacked any lineup protection behind him. I think we will see him move to 4th next year and hopefully a solidLH hits behind him. I think his average will come around and I think his power numbers are very good. My only qualm is the thought he may have to end up a DH. Hopefully if he struggles in LF , he can move to !B.
  16. Baseball reference and Espn have him as a -.02 DWAR
  17. Anderson is tied for 2nd in MLB range factor this season. If throwing is a player's weakness, a guy with great range will get more chances but also more throwing errors.
  18. We probably all agree especially since he only has played there one season. But this goes back to my posting yesterday on TA as a SS. Like TA, Yoan is rated as one of the worst 3B in Dwar. I think only Kris Bryant is worse.
  19. JD Martinez has played 39% of his time this season in LF/RF. You would need the 4th OF to be good defensively since JD is below average but it really adds a quality bat at DH as well. Not sure Hahn will pay him what he will want but ooking at the current rebuild lineup , we may not be able to afford another poor defender. The SP staff may go on strike.
  20. By getting to balls that most players don't, it also exposes him to getting more throwing errors as well. I wonder what all the increased shifting has done for defensive metrics. It certainly affects range factor and it also opens up players( mostly SS) to having to make more plays from different angles.
  21. But I wasn't referring to his overall ability to play SS as his regression based on WAR. I was trying to understand how TA as a rookie was vastly superior in dawar to his play this season. I see where he has 10 more errors but he has improved his range factor this year. What other defensive stats other than errors has he dropped in from rookie year to present. Using WAR, it would indicate TA has not improved in his 4 years. His offense has jumped way up but has completely been offset by his decline in defense. As a casual fan, I don't agree but there must be metrics I am missing.
  22. Someone posted yesterday that Abreu w 100+ RBI's still trails Yolmer in WAR. I was thinking today what a good year Tim has had at the plate. He continues to keep his average above .320 . I looked up his WAR after 100 games this season and he is at 2.7. His rookie year he played 99 games and his WAR for that season was 2.7. Now across the board, his offensive numbers except triples are higher than in 2016 including a significant increase in BA and a huge drop in SO. But regardless, his DWAR drop this year offsets his OWAR increase. He has made 10 more errors this year but has an increase in range factor. WAR fans may get under the covers and find some rationale but it seems to me that errors have a greater impact on WAR than any offensive stat.
  23. Just a thought to maybe save you some time. Do you really think JR reads his mail? You can be assured he has an admin who opens all his mail and sends to him what he wants and places the rest in her circular file. Maybe send it to Hahn instead in case he is looing for an advisor.........................
  24. We agreed previously on Grandal. The guy tends to die down the stretch. But I think there would be a problem dropping him into a 3 way rotation. If you can drop him to 120ish that might work. Otherwise I would pass on him and maybe trade for a LH IB/DH type.
