  1. he's buddies with Hawk. He played on the same high school team -- Dr. Philllips in Orlando -- with Hawk's son, Casey. He's probably been a long time closet sox fan. Bring him on.
  2. ONly if we can get Travis Fryman, Charles Nagy and Paul Assenbacher to come with Robbie. No, no, no to Robbie Redux.
  3. no no no no rather have Julio Ramirez Lofton is a front-runner who can no longer steal bases or hit the way he used to. no thank you
  4. Hey, at a launching pad like The Cell Beltran could put up monster numbers. But I suspect Boras is using as many teams as possible to drive up the price before his guy goes to a large market team. He used the Sox in the ARod sweepstakes, remember?

he'll have a good year or two and then it will be bye-bye -- like many Sox players, especially anybody represented by Boras
  6. Bentitez not for three years. Giants are throwin money down the toilet to give him and Vizquel three years.
  7. No good position. too many whiffs. too few walks. let's look elsewhere.
  8. I believe JR also dealt directly with Arn Tellem on the Albert Belle deal. As much as he dislikes Boras, he likes Tellem. If the price is right and Nomar checks out physically, I'd do this. we need a bat to replace Maggs. And its easier to find another outfielder than a shortstop. Rowand CF Nomar SS Frank DH Konerko 1B Caballo LF Everett RF Uribe 2B Crede 3b Davis C it ain't much defensively, but we could still score some runs.
  9. Thought they would cool on Anderson after his flat performance in the AFL.
  10. I'll take my shot: 1. B Mac -- Baseball America loves pitchers and this kid had one of the best years in the minors, jumping two levels. 2. Sweeney -- they've loved him for a long time and he played in high A ball as a 19 year old. 3. Anderson -- wonder if they'll count his so-so play in the AFL against him. 4. Fields -- Joe Crede should be hearing footsteps real soon. 5. Gonzalez -- everybody loves a lefty with a plus plus curveball 6. Young -- Mike Cameron Jr. 7. Hernandez -- a catcher who can throw and hit. Bring him on. 8. Whisler -- pitcher, hitter? Hitter, pitcher. still figuring it out. 9. Honel -- hoping he gets healthy and stays healthy 10. Rogowski -- hard to argue with his OBP.
  11. i fear this some kind of a ploy by Walker's people to get this rumor into the media so it will increase his bargaining power with another team. he's a good hitter but he's been on a LOT of teams the last five or six years -- Twins, Reds, Red Sox, Cubs and maybe the Pirates. Something's up with this guy.
  12. i'd take either Lieber or Clement. prefer lieber because he throws strikes and should be even better this season because a number of pitchers are in their second season back after arm surgery but either one makes our pitching much improved

Crede is a Boras player. Maybe we will trade him
  14. Word out of St. Louis is that the Cardinals are going to go hard for Polanco to replace Womack at second base. Forget that one.
  15. For us out of towners, was anything said about what the Sox ARE going to do instead of simply what they are NOT going to do? Not specific players, but positions? A right-fielder or center fielder? A second baseman or shortstop? A closer or a reliever? Surely he's smart enough to understand he has to do SOMETHING to ignite the fans base.
  16. Hard to understand how Beltran's 18 million fits into a $70 million payroll. and you know he's going to want 7 years. The Trib article mentions 10. Sounds good. but it's not realistic.
  17. There haven't been a string of great performances from the Sox Six in the Arizona Fall League, but Dennis Ulacia delivered one yesterday: four innings, three hits, one earned run, one walk, seven strikeouts. This kid has been up and down on the prospect lists. But with Wing gone, he might be the left-hander closest to the majors, a possible long reliever by the middle of 2005.
  18. Rock has the ability to make a difference on baserunning and preparing to play the game. Hope he does it.
  19. just saw those numbers from my Baseball America update. Hey, Joe, say it ain't so. ouch. I don't see any way the Sox can even have him on the team as a backup outfielder. Hope Joe invested that signing bonus intelligently -- and that JR asks the scouting department how in the hell they explain this. That is 5 million down the hole.
  20. bring stoney on We need to win more of the PR war against the Cubs. It would be a coup to have him in the organization.
  21. Brandon McCarthy, Josh Fields, Ryan Sweeney, Brian Anderson and Carlos Lee would probably do the trick. Until Kenny Williams decides he'd prefer to pay even more. I would laugh -- but I don't want to tempt Kenny Kool.
  22. What's Gardenhire or his staff going to say? Yep, Backman's a turd. He was all over Manuel all year. Backman's gone. Move on. Our problem isn't the manager. It's the general manager -- and the roster and the farm system.
  23. it's not really something wrong with the Red Sox. What is wrong is the entire system. It's hardly an accident that 7 of the 8 teams that made the playoffs ranked in the top 12 in payroll The Sox really have no room to b**** because Minnesota was behind us in payroll. What's wrong is the system. It's blatantly unfair. Never mind the White Sox. Teams such as the Reds, Pirates, Royals, Brewers have little to no chance to compete, much less win. Yes, the Marlins have delivered twice since 1997. But I view that as more fluke than anything else. Plus, both times they won, they slipped back the next season because they had to dump good players. Until baseball owners and players agree to put some balance into the equation, we're going to get Red Sox Nation (blahhhhh!) and the Evil Empire driven down our throats every October.
  24. The Red Sox farm system stinks. They don't care about developing talent. They have gotten really good the last few years because they HAVE INDEED bought talent -- Ramirez, Damon, Schilling, Foulke -- four of the 8 most important players on the team. Sure they have a few pieces they traded for. But the basis of the point is DEAD ON. (Actually a second home grown guy is Kevin Youkilis.) They've jacked the payroll up way beyond everybody but the Yankees. They are the Yankees Lite. Their home grown guys are the Adam Everetts and Donnie Sadlers and Michael Colemans and Dernell Stinsons and Steve Lomanseys and Tony Blancos who have done little in the big leagues. Theo Epstein hasn't put them over the top. George Washington has.
  25. Sorry. Enough of the Foulke Love In Let's not forget the homer to Edgar in the 10th inning of Game One in 2000 that set the tone for that sweep in the playoffs. Or his constant whining about wanting to start. Or his going to Manuel and asking to be removed as the closer because he felt like the team had lost confidence in him. Or the home run he gave up to Giambi and the Yankees that went about 800 feet and started a slide in 2002. He did some good things. He was better than Koch. But he's just another mercenary player looking for the biggest paycheck. Nothing more, nothing less.
