  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 16, 2014 -> 09:39 AM) What happens if the arrival time for Rodon is June/July? IMO that's by far the most likely scenario, a few months of AA/AAA and then appears late enough in the season that it happens to be after he'd pass the Super-2 point. Not just because of that, but because he's had so little minor league time. If he puts up an ERA in the 2's in AAA in the first half there's no reason to keep him in the minors all year, but if you sign someone to a big contract, who leaves the rotation? One of the big contract guys? Quintana/Sale? Or are we counting on Noesi to be worse than last year - because if he's any better than this year, replacing him mid-season with a rookie would be a downgrade that won't happen. We've had this argument before, but that seems unlikely. Noesi is expendable.
  2. QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 16, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) I know it doesnt fit the exact model that they've built their team with, but is anyone more inspired to spend money on the bullpen this offseason after watching KC's bullpen shut down people all year and be lights out in the postseason? Kansas City doesnt have a great offense by any means and their starters aren't all that special outside out Shields. What they do well though, is field exceptionally and shut people down from the 6th inning on. They dont have a ton of money invested in the pen because theyve developed all those pitchers besides Davis, but I think it goes without saying how important it is for the Sox to invest in improving their bullpen this year. I realize Miller and Robertson are going to be overpriced, but you need atleast one truly shut down guy out there next season or you can watch this team hover around .500 again. Get one of these guys to close, move Bassitt to setup, and have guys like Petricka, Putam, and Guerra battle it out for the 7th. No - if anything, it reinforces that you can put together a great pen without spending a lot because Wade Davis can emerge as a stud for seemingly no reason. There will be 20 guys next season as good as Miller and Robertson who earn a fraction of what they do. We just have to get lucky and find them.
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 05:48 PM) Hawk will be even more intolerable next year if KC wins it all. Catching the ball and bullpen. There, fixed it.
  4. QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) jeeze ...... what did he do, kick your dog? Ha, he might have. I don't know. I just don't think he'll ever be any good.
  5. I personally don't think Phegley can do anything. EDIT: In relation to Major League Baseball, of course. I'm sure he has other hobbies at which he excels.
  6. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) Sub .400 SLG the past two years. If you hit him second, that's fine, but that doesn't cut it for a guy who might hit 3rd, 5th, or 6th on this team. He does lack power, but he also has a pretty good OBP. Anybody with that profile should be hitting in front of Abreu. I'd be okay with him. Not ecstatic.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 03:32 PM) Oh but then without Neal Cotts, what do the White Sox do in 2005? Maybe we sweat it out in the World Series a little more with Damaso getting the call in Game 1. Then who gets the win in Game 3?! *shivers*
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 08:35 AM) No matter what, there's going to be a former member of the White Sox winning a World Series ring this year, so I guess choose who you want to root for. Off the top of my head: Royals: Downs, Frasor Orioles: De Aza Cardinals: Pierzynski Giants: Peavy Hoping the best for Sox legends Scott Downs and Jason Frasor.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 11:46 PM) Think about what we witnessed. The fans actually helped Moustakas and didn't foolishly impede him for a f***ing baseball. There could easily have been another fan made infamous tonight in a different scenario. I'd have to watch it again but I thought I saw a few people reaching up. It was a lot harder for the KC fans to interfere because they were below field level rather than above it.
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) Was one of the best trades you could make for an ace. I still have no idea how that team, with all the talent, didn't go anywhere. I remember Colon was just filthy down the stretch that year. Billy Koch: -0.4 WAR, -0.98 WPA Keith Foulke: 1.8 WAR, 3.98 WPA Sox lost the division by four games and that's one of the easiest reasons to point to. I remember Colon had a complete game 2-hitter, allowing two solo HR's, and we lost 2-0.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) Arguably the greatest defensive play of all time. The fact that it took place right under THE CATCH couldn't possibly be funnier.
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 09:41 AM) you post far too often about Dayan Viciedo
  13. One day after an assessment of the Eaton/Santiago swap, SSS does the same for Reed/Davidson. Let's just put all future discussion of that trade in one thread and see if it can reach 50,000 posts.
  14. You can speculate on who was clean but there's no type to identify. Ryan Braun and Roger Clemens cheated. So did Alex Sanchez and Guillermo Mota. The 2005 Sox probably had some users; I bet every team still does. Trying to worry too much about it will just drive you crazy.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) Maybe thats based on your posting history *rimshot* jk It's for odor-shielding trash bags too. You're probably on to something.
  16. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 08:29 AM) I'm here I'm here. Santiago was pretty dominant after being recalled and was a major part in the Angels ability to take over the A's. Overall the year was a step back for him but he still has left a big whole in our pitching staff. Hopefully we won'thave to spend much to replace him. I'm rooting for him and he should bounce back to his 2013 levels next year. My worry is still the same, that he's been jerked around so often that it's stunted his development but we'll see. Dominant is a bit strong. 3.30 ERA with 77 K's and 35 walks in 90 innings after the demotion. Also, look at his game log - in none of those 17 starts did he pitch into the 7th inning. He generally lasted about 5. He had four quality starts. He was okay but a pitcher like him doesn't fit well on a team with a bullpen like the 2014 Sox.
  17. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 13, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) Am I the only one getting the "back where we belong" Cards NLCS gear ad at the top of soxtalk? Brutal. You are not, I've seen it a bunch as well. And they might be based on your browsing history some of the time, but not all the time, considering right now I have an ad for trash bags and I'm pretty sure I've never Googled trash bags or anything related to them.
  18. This trade was a winner from the moment it happened, and I found myself confused that anybody was upset about it. Average starting pitcher for leadoff hitter with on-base skills. We have hindsight to make it look even better, but I always loved it. Can't wait til SSS recaps Reed for Davidson. Nobody's talked much about that one lately.
  19. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 01:36 PM) Does anyone actually wear a watch to tell time now a days? QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 02:48 PM) I do. Easier than pulling phone out of pocket every time. Ditto. Plus I've been wearing one for so long now that I feel weird without it.
  20. Sandoval, despite being a switch hitter, also has the same platoon disadvantage as Conor. Career-long it isn't nearly as pronounced, but it was pretty severe in 2014. Worth watching, and I don't think he's a good target.
  21. There's an argument to be made for Eaton but I would rather see one more good year out of him and give up a little more money to extend him after that. We know, and Hahn has candidly said, that catching help was a priority going into 2014. While Flowers had a decent season, I don't think he did enough to take the org from that mindset to extension territory. Gillaspie isn't franchise-y enough, and we don't have much to gain from extending him. Early in the season, I advocated on a different board for giving Daniel Webb something like 5 years, $10 million so the Sox could deploy him however they wanted and not have to worry about saves driving up his arb price. This was days before the A's did the same thing with Sean Doolittle. I might still believe that's a good idea if he charges out of the gate in 2015.
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 01:41 PM) I think they would still tell you what they paid CC was worth it. If you put that 8 year deal over 5 years with the rest being dead money, you are talking about 36M per year and given the value he brought to the organization over his first 5 years, I don't think they'd have a major issue. Team got WAR of 22.1 over 5 years, with an average of 4.42. He also in certain years was one of the very best in the entire game. I'd say if they went back, they probably still make the deal (would they prefer less years, sure, but all things considered, I think they'd say what they got out of CC was worth it...especially when you factor in their payroll). When you compare it to the other stratospheric pitcher contracts, CC's looks great. His is probably the best case so far - pitches like a stud for a while, then flames out in the last few years. Greinke has been fine so far but there's a long way to go and he hasn't equaled CC's best years with the Yankees. Signing the best pitcher just isn't wise.
  23. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 12:10 PM) Hardy back with the O's at 3 years 40 million.
  24. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 9, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) I'm sure they're s***ty. Legitimately lol'ed.
