QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 10, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) I just don't know. everybody has an opinion and I will respect that. but..... I am not excited about it. if we were going to go for someone, why not Edwin Encarnacion from tor. get a window to redo his contract. tor is hurting with salary, even if they were bid on some players. yeah there salary is what 25+ mil right about now. but I was tossing that out there. Edwin is a bona fide beast and would look very nice on the Sox, but you'd have to give up an actual ton.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 01:23 PM) Chris YOung is a fly ball pitcher. Not happening. Not Chris Young the pitcher, Chris Young the outfielder. There's a lot to dislike about Rasmus, but there's also a lot that's tantalizing. Can't make up my mind on him. If he ended up with the Sox I think I'd just trust that we did our homework.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 12:50 PM) Jesus, people who actually do this for a living think Rasmus will get 3/36? Based on his age and power I can totally see it.

He has the Sox going big on quantity and small on dollars, scooping up outfielders Rasmus (3/$36), Bonifacio (2/$12), and Chris Young (1/$5) while signing Kendrys Morales (1/$9). I have no violently negative reactions to any of those names at those prices, including Rasmus. No arms, but he limited his guesses to 55 top guys and a lot of the available relief pitchers weren't on that list. Bonifacio is a name that I haven't seen brought up around here much. Not sure how much of a fit he is. He's a good utility guy to have around as he can pretty much play every position and he would be especially useful as Eaton injury insurance, but a two-year deal seems unlikely to come from the Sox. I also can't see both Bonifacio and Young; I feel like the Sox would rely on someone internally rather than bringing in a second guy who doesn't move the needle much. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-free-agent-predictions/

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) I don't know why everyone is down on johnson. I'm pretty sure he is penciled in to be the second basemen from the start of spring training unless something happens. Until he fails at second base I don't think they are moving him. I'm really intrigued to see him play. He would have been up here in September if it wasn't for the injury. He seems to hit at every level and get on base. Plus when he's on base he's a threat to steal. I'm pretty sure his bat it what's getting him up here. You can still teach him defense. I really hope he comes up plays really well to stop the doubt. If it doesn't work out then you have others that can step in. I know hahn from comments in the past has talked him up and they like what they see. I know you want defense but we had that with Gordon and he couldn't hit. So he got moved for someone that will have a chance to actually hit hopefully. He has yet to really show much at Charlotte. Not that he's some out of time or anything, but he hasn't done it in AAA yet. I don't think anybody is writing him off, but it would be surprising if he succeeded in the majors right out of the gate in 2015.

I'd rather just sign Sandoval at his astronomical asking price than taking Fielder.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 08:03 AM) If the NBA doesn't want him sitting guys in their late 30s for prime time games, they don't have to make those the 2nd night of B2B's. This. The schedule is the problem, not Pop.

Respectable LF or no, I'm not sure he can be a respectable bat in 2015.

Mets/LAD/NYy interested in Alexei, according to Levine
shysocks replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 7, 2014 -> 08:27 AM) I do not want the Sox to trade Alexei. He is the perfect player to anchor our young infield, until his successor can take over. That may be Anderson, or it might be Rondon. However, neither of them are ready. There are no other guys in the organization who are ready to provide the kind of defense that Ramirez does. All of our other infielders are better suited at 2ND. He also is a solid bat, with a little pop, and a pretty run producer. It makes no sense to trade him, if the Sox are really going to try to contend this season. I agree with you 100%. Alexei's contract lines up well with the state of the organization and there is no urgent need to trade him, so unless Hahn is blown away by the return, you hang onto him. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 08:14 AM) $100-116 million for a 3B who's very likely to continue to battle weight/health issues into his 30's....and who's likely to put up a 725-750ish OPS in the coming years? I don't think the upgrade is worth the money unless it's for an all-around superstar-caliber player with offensive and defensive skills in the OF or at catcher. Sandoval's a 12-18 homer guy now, which isn't FAR off what Conor could be expected to provide in the next year or so. The major difference is his defense, but is that really worth a nine figure contract for a team that hasn't approached that number for a single player? Independent of all the other points you made - Sandoval's camp saying he's looking for $100M does not mean he'll get $100M. He'll still be too expensive for my liking, but him reaching nine figures would surprise me.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 03:28 PM) It's sort of true. Aside from Abreu, Sale and Q who on the Sox is desirable? Out of the everyday players, maybe Lexi. Sox fans like Lexi, A. Garcia and Eaton, but are they really guys teams want? They can definitely do without those guys. Those three most definitely have trade value.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 03:21 PM) What about for Viciedo? Maybe we get something back like a BP arm as well. Viciedo wouldn't net Jason Castro.

QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 03:09 PM) Pretty hilarious...Astros fan on mlbtraderumors saying it would cost Jose Abreu or Chris Sale because " there's nobody on that team anybody wants"

Victor Martinez Re-signs with Tigers
shysocks replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) I'm not sold on him either. As far as Victor, aren't we arguing a moot point? Has there been any shred of evidence the Sox would pay that kind of money after the Dunn fiasco? Any credible media mentions at all? Depends, of course, on your definition of credible. This is sort of the first mention. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 09:21 AM) $4/5 million isn't going to kill the team. At absolute worst, if you waived the guy, someone would claim him for just his salary. You might be right, but that again depends on somebody out there thinking he's not worthless. Viciedo has had 1800 plate appearances to prove what he can do and it's been a failure. I don't care about his age, he doesn't make any progress. As DA said, Hahn probably knows the market better than any of us. I just have trouble imagining anybody wanting this guy. A .300 OBP and terrible defense undermine the 20 HR sales pitch.
-
I did give the Sox a 70% chance of trading him... Regardless, if some team wants to give actual value for the opportunity to pay Dayan Viciedo four million dollars, that team is run by suckers.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 5, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) Agreed. I would tender him and then try to trade him. Even by tendering him, they would be around 56 million in contract commitments for 2015. So what happens if we can't trade him? It's not far-fetched to think he would be difficult to move, given the trade deadline we just witnessed. So either we move him for some organization's literal garbage, or we're stuck with him wasting a roster spot again. In my opinion, the 1% chance that the Sox turn Viciedo into the next Matt Thornton is not worth the 30% chance that they're forced to keep employing him.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) I wouldn't. I'm done with him, and I'm convinced that he'll be the starting LF if he's tendered a contract because that means no one wanted him before that deadline. He's not going to have higher value in January than now, he's a terrible, terrible, terrible option as a backup OF because of defense and baserunning, and we've already seen Rick get stuck with guys people talked about him trying to trade because he offered them arbitration and no one wanted them until the end of the year. This.
-
Lester's another guy like Quintana whose handedness you ignore because the splits are barely there. I wouldn't be scared off him because of the lefty thing. I would be scared off by the dollars he'll get.
-
Flowers, Noesi, Jones are obvious tenders. Guerra, slightly below that. Viciedo and Belisario, GTFO.

Victor Martinez Re-signs with Tigers
shysocks replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 09:06 AM) Why can't the White Sox be contenders next year? The anti Victors are saying his production will not match the contract. That isn't a perfect fit anywhere. If you think Victor can hit, he would be good for the White Sox. If you think he isn't good for the White Sox, he isn't good for a team with less revenue. I don't understand the reasoning of Victor being an upgrade over Butler, but posters actually preferring Butler over Victor for the White Sox. They can be, it's just less likely. I continue to think that Victor's production will not match his contract, but if I had to pick one year of the next four where it will, it's 2015. That's the most important year for the Royals. The most important year for the Sox is 2016, or maybe later. "Bad contract for Sox = bad contract for Royals" makes sense in a vacuum, but all 30 teams are in a different situation, and I'll just say that Victor wouldn't be as bad a deal for KC. And just for the record, I do not want Butler, and I do not think the Royals will sign Martinez -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 08:59 AM) That Cabrera contract is going to go down with the 2nd Arod deal as one of the worst in baseball history. Especially when you think about when they actually signed the extension.

Victor Martinez Re-signs with Tigers
shysocks replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 4, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) Why is Victor Martinez perfect for the Royals, but for the White Sox he would be nothing but a bad contract? That seems fairly obvious - the Sox aren't primed to be contenders next year when VMart would be most likely to earn his money, and he'd be declining and potentially done when the team was ready to compete. The Royals are at a different point on the win curve and an upgrade in 2015 could make the contract worth it despite the decline years. Let's save the rehashing of whether or not old guys decline and which ones do or don't for another time. Whether or not you agree with the above, that's the reasoning. -
Victor Martinez Re-signs with Tigers
shysocks replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 3, 2014 -> 07:19 PM) The Royals were a few timely hits away from being WS champs. Victor's bat easily makes up the difference and as I said, the Royals have the money to afford Victor and I'd bet the desire seeing as how close they were. They were also a few timely outs away from being just another forgettable wild card team, though I understand your point about their advancement through the playoffs motivating spending. My gut is just that they aren't going to be buying any of the premium free agents. Not to mention that the org has often pointed out how the team is built around defense - allocating 20% or more of their annual payroll on a DH is contrary to that. I am not arguing he wouldn't be a good pickup for them though.
