I thought that too, about it just being a procedural move. Dude earned a spot on the team and the injury is unfortunate for him. Varland, I had him lumped into the “near-30 guys who we could cut and not bat an eye that we can cut anytime in the offseason” so no loss there.

Berroa is going on the 60-day IL. He just hasn't been placed on it yet. Carela is another guy they could transfer to the 60-day IL if they wanted to open up a spot but not sure they would since they optioned him.

Man, it sucks because I was in the "non-tender Vaughn and platoon Colas at 1B with literally anyone" camp. Didn't know at the time but the person could have been Drury. Hopefully Vaughn hits and can be traded.

If they didn't do it last year with all of the opportunities that arose, they probably won't do it this year. It's unfortunate for sure.
