I was actually thinking, maybe the money saved from signing someone like Bauer (or trading for someone who would cost a lot) and trading for Lynn could go towards signing a guy like Brantley for a one year, high AAV deal.
Trading for a 34-year old is a little different than trading for a guy who was on pace to be a free agent for the first time at the age of 30, likely looking at one big pay day in his career.
True. I guess they can role with Cease and if he isn't good, they can let him work in the minors and replace him with Kopech. Going withca better starter than Q is probably the way to go.
Edit: unless of course he loves Chicago and just wants to pitch for a contender in some capacity and is willing to sign as a long-reliever giving us more depth when we add someone else too.
He also missed all of 2019 due to TJ and no minor league games in 2020 to work his way back from. Don't think we saw his complete upside.
Having said that, I don't hate the move.
You wanna offer a 34 year old a close to 1 year/$20 mill deal? That's about what the QO will be (if its even a thing in the next CBA).
Edit: he may have received a QO in a prior offseason so he wouldn't be eligible.
Fuck it. Throw out the offer you offered Wheeler and work from there.
(sorry to those who see this thread being revived and think there is any updates).
Jerry is getting up there in age to the point where he probably wouldn't even be paying the last couple years of a potential long-term deal. That also scares me and makes me feel like prospects can be dealt in a "go for it" season in a year or two as he also realizes this.
