There's no point of doing that with Madrigal unless it is really cheap and he gives up multiple years of free agency to make the risk worth it (unlike the Eloy and Robert deals where we got one).

I don't think they'll be one of the final bidders personally. If Jerry is signing anyone to a $300+, long-term deal, it will be someone already in house like Moncada. Dude is loyal (sometimes to a fault).

The luxury tax CAP goes by AAV anyway so it doesn't matter if he is paid significantly more one year and then significantly little the next.

Ideally, these guys are playing close to 162 games a year (in a perfect world, you shouldn't have to worry about Leury being the only backup in CF on your team if he's playing 5-10 games out there). But hard to not plan for injuries.

I think they'll look for someone who can play SS too. So can probably cross most of those names off besides Miller and Mercer really.

If he is in the mix as a starter, I would say he has a pretty good chance of making their aging roster as a backup.

I do agree and I think most teams normally do 12 with a 4-man (5 if NL) bench but with the extra spot this year, you probably see an extra pitcher from everyone who had used 12 (mostly) previous years.

As of now, I'd guess McCann, Engel, Mendick and then someone they could DFA for Madrigal's spot like Cheslor Cuthbert or Andrew Romine, someone with flexibility. Fortunately, I think they make one more move and we see neither of those guys on the roster and Mendick is the one sent down for Madrigal.

No chance they break with 3 catchers. Unless Collins gets sent down when Madrigal is ready.
