I would prefer to play Rondon over Yolmer but yeah, it makes sense to showcase Yolmer. A team with a shot of contending may need a decent 2B mid-season. Also worth mentioning that he only has 2 more years of control left after this year.
I'll give it to you and say it's a very small factor. Draft pick or not, no other teams were shelling out the money. And he wanted the long term deal, hence, not accepting a 3/4 year 40 mill deal from Dodgers. Or Giants was it?
If you don't sign Machado because you're worried about your second pick in the draft (whatever the Padres would have surrendered), you should be fired.
Total dollar amount was still $30 million more than Machado. I think they just made the deal as long as it was to keep the AAV lower for luxury tax purposes going forward. I don't think there's much factor here in the draft pick compensation.
Yeah. Let's be honest. What will be worth more at the deadline: a light-hitting catcher who can't catch or a back-end reliever with success in the closer's role?
100%. A move where they potentially save a lot of money does not make up for being cheap asses on a young star. Dammit, now I'm starting to re-open my scar on the topic haha
