  1. QUOTE (QuickJones81 @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 01:13 PM) If you have Ace results people will always view you as a #2 if you don't have Ace type dominating "stuff". Probably hurts that he was in the shadow of Chris Sale as well.
  2. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 12:56 PM) Those are a pair of big strong oxen to put in the corners. Grab a couple guys from the low end of the Yankees T30 on top of that and I'm all in. Judge offers intriguing buy-low appeal, as does Mateo. You're talking about him in a deal for Q. I wouldn't consider that as a "buy-low."
  3. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 12:27 PM) This goes along the lines with my thoughts on other FA. As it gets closer to ST I would take a look at who's available and then I'd pick the guys who fit best to have a chance at returning a low level prospect at the deadline. I'm not sure Howard fits that for me. Phillies probably desperately wanted to trade him and couldn't find anything. I think even with a $1-2mm salary attached he's not getting you anybody. I'd be more inclined to look at a Morneau again or a Luis Valbuena or Rasmus, Revere, etc. Valbuena can play around the diamond and we all know there are trends in baseball. Since the Royals started it a few years ago, everybody is on the "Bullpen" bandwagon. All of a sudden, and as you can tell with these contracts being passed out, relievers are gold. The next trend I see happening is the utility player being the golden ticket. So you've seen it with Zobrist and Baez. But I think managers are trending towards "flexibility". If you stick so and so player at 2b today then you can start this guy in LF who has better splits against LHP" I can see people like Saladino and Valbuena having some extra worth to them. And to an extent Lawrie around the IF. In terms of Morneau, I just think his upside is larger than a Howard. I agree though, these FA signed to 1 or 2 year deals aren't blocking anybody and if picked off correctly should be able to be flipped when necessary. I agree with this. No one is trading for a 37 year old Howard unless he is mashing the ball. I'd rather give the at bats to someone already here or another sign-and-flip candidate.
  4. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 18, 2016 -> 11:39 PM) I actually like the Sox stable of position player prospects and I'm not just talking about the top tier guys like Moncada, Collins or even Basabe. I'd be willing to bet that this time next year a position player (other than Collins) drafted or signed in Intl FA by the Sox will be on a top 100 list. I dont know who its going to be, but there are few guys they have just itching for a breakout and those college bats they drafted last year I think will work out well. Somebody is going to explode. I like Fisher and Call a lot.
  5. QUOTE (Fantl916 @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 11:44 AM) sure, that makes sense. just seemed interesting that his name even came up. i'd assume most would rather have a solid prospect w years of control over pineda w 1 yr hoping a) coop fixes him and b) you then sign him to a longer deal at a reasonable price I don't think anyone is saying they would take him over prospects. But as a 4th or 5th piece with the first 3 or 4 pieces being top prospects, I believe is what he is getting at.
  6. QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 11:13 AM) Prior to his callup there was talk of Anderson being a centerfielder down the line. Having a glut of shortstops is a whole lot better than having a glut of 1B only or LF only players.
  7. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 11:10 AM) Not that it really matters, but isn't Torres an SS? Where would Anderson play if they acquired him? Torres isn't really close to being ready so it's pretty irrelevant for a few years. He would continue playing short stop until he was close to coming up. Great problem to have. Acquire the best talent even if there is already depth at that position and sort it out later.
  8. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 10:40 AM) But why? Unless the market for him just isn't there, I find it highly unlikely that Jones will ever be worth more than he is right now. The Sox need to take advantage of that. Takes two to make a deal. It's easy for us to say he should be dealt for a haul but you also have to find the team willing to deal the haul.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) Do you think it's likely that Jones is moved this offseason? Like you said, they might as well move Jones now while his value is sky high and wait for DRob to get back to the way he was before last season and flip him to a desperate team next trade deadline. I know you asked Rabbit (it's opinionated anyway) but in my opinion I'm gonna say no.
  10. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 10:21 AM) Agreed. Sox best course of action is to let Robertson rebuild his value and trade Jones and his incredible contract now. I kind of expected him to be here on opening day all along. Rebuild that value and get dealt in June or July if not sooner.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 09:44 AM) Naw Avi is our RFer! Yeah as things stand right now, definitely.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 09:39 AM) I had the feeling that the back injury bothered him more than anyone let on. He seemed to be having some pretty decent mechanical problems at points last season, and he seemed to be trying to protect his back after some deliveries. It is a complete stab in the dark, but I think the Sox got conned by the Padres, and they didn't want to make a big deal of it. I expect Shields to come back in better shape and healthy, and put up decent numbers. Exactly. So I'm expecting anywhere from solid back-end of the rotation type numbers to how he did last year (maybe slightly worse).
  13. I wouldn't be shocked if he put up decent 5th starter type numbers and I wouldn't be shocked if he got lit up in all honesty.
  14. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 18, 2016 -> 05:01 PM) 31 starts 4.89 ERA 176 IP 129 K 155 BB 38 HR 1 CG 2 SO 14 QS Your turn This is pretty spot on to what I'm thinking actually.
  15. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 18, 2016 -> 07:09 AM) Not having read every post in this thread, I would insist that a deal with Houston start with Bregman. I understand their reluctance to part with him, but the deal for Sale set the bar pretty high. Would including Frazier, to replace Bregman at third, satisfy the Astros? I recognize that Frazier is only one season from free agency. Nevertheless, what would be a fair return for Quintana and Frazier? Gurriel would play third.
  16. QUOTE (ventura_abreu @ Dec 17, 2016 -> 11:21 AM) Was he previously on our 40 man roster? No.
  17. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 17, 2016 -> 11:16 AM) Yeah, that their CF was injured. First Jackson and then Tilson.
  18. QUOTE (Moncada @ Dec 17, 2016 -> 10:05 AM) If nothing gets moving today then I have a really strong feeling that nothing happens until January If today was December 23rd I could maybe see it.
  19. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Dec 17, 2016 -> 09:04 AM) We seriously need a new tweet to spice up these rumors. I cant take it anymore This x100000
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 17, 2016 -> 08:20 AM) I bet Holland signs for more than we think. Probably. I bet he takes a 1 year deal with a lot of incentives though with a decent base salary. I wouldn't mind giving it to him.
  21. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Dec 16, 2016 -> 10:53 PM) What's more important to a guy from Cuba, winning the World Series or extending his career and making more millions and helping more of his family and friends? Granted, he's rich as hell already, but the money he's making can change a lot of lives. You really think winning a championship is that important in the grand scheme of things? He's complaining AFTER he's accomplished BOTH of these.
  22. QUOTE (Blackout Friday @ Dec 16, 2016 -> 10:46 PM) I would actually love to see us sign Holland. It further opens up the market for Robertson, plus adds an arm that could prove valuable come the trade deadline. We should. Just offer a million or two more than highest offer.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 16, 2016 -> 02:16 PM) I'm a bit surprised its this high. I love our star power now but to me it doesn't have depth of yankees or padres, where 30 deep has players that could be MLBers. Yeah that seems a bit high right now. Guy in an mlbtr chat the other day said they could have the best farm system after the next draft.
