There’s not much risk in this deal at all though. They’re essentially paying him slightly more than $3 million a year for the next 5 years. If he sucks by the end of the contract they just won’t pick up the club options. I like it.

Makes a lot of sense if they want to make him the closer of the future. This extension avoids having to pay him a lot in arbitration down the line.

The Sox should have signed him to a deal like that. He was the perfect fit for this team. But of course Reinsdorf is too cheap.

I could see Puig preferring the Rockies to the Sox. He would probably get more playing time there and hitting in Coors would inflate his stats.

I’m not a big Puig fan but I’d be fine with it at this point. He’s good depth should someone get hurt and will come cheap enough that the Sox can DFA him if it doesn’t work out.

But Dozier and Holt aren’t really shortstops either, so I don’t know what the plan is at this point unless they’re just going to go with Leury as the utility infielder once Madrigal comes up.
