Long and rebuild definitely belong with the way they've attempted to assemble a team. Ready for the decades to fly by.

Interesting to note that Hahn flat out said they aren't in the market to buy any rental players. That is much different from a year ago where we were all confused whether we would buy or sell. The overall tone seems much different and you wonder if there has been on voice who has been pushing for a different path in these meetings who might be getting more of that voice?

Seems like Hahn has been giving more voice. Garfein had this tweet today

Hahn says they thought about rebuilding in 2013, but chose this path instead. Says they'll take a more open-minded approach going forward.

I believe it was RaBBit and Bucket saying that Hahn wanted to rebuild back then, but KW and JR still wanted to compete and win with this group and just add proven veterans. So Hahn had to adjust and scout players that would best fit this club. Example, Samardzija, Frazier, Lawrie, Melky, Robertson.

Hahn might finally have his way at rebuilding this club the way he wants too. Let's see what he can do without him being pulled back by KW and JR.

Right. It's a trade off. Right now, teams are more desperate. In the offseason there are more teams interested but they're not as liable to be stupid.

What a difference half a season make. I would love to see the percentage of people here who want a full rebuild now.

Teams are more likely to overpay with additional prospects (not on mlb roster) at the deadline. If you want young mlb proven talent in a deal for Sale or Q you have to wait until the offseason because teams can fill those holes created in the offseason but not in the middle of the season.

If Sale or Quintana go, I agree it won't be until the offseason. Sox can get more teams involved on the bidding and with the weak SP FA market, a major bidding war can erupt for both these guys.

It is hard to imagine that they would trade both Sale and Quintana. How would they rebuild a starting rotation, with both of those arms gone?

One of them does indeed make sense, if they can fill several holes, in return.

I'm still leaning toward trading one of them and a few veteran offensive players, such as Frazier.

Well if they can get Urias back that helps the rotation at some point

Teams with decade long rebuilds can't afford to keep their guys. That's a problem the Sox organization doesn't have. The Pirates are a great example. They had Bonds and they couldn't afford to pay him. Same with Bonilla.

Say they trade both Sale and Q.

You still have Rodon, Fulmer, and Shields.

You're going to get back at least one - probably two frontline SP prospects like Urias and De Leon. You're also going to get some more projectable / further off SP prospects.

We've also got Burdi, Adams, and Hansen.

By 2018 you're also looking at FA options.

In addition to these assets, you're also looking at adding a top flight CF, 3B, and 2B.

Potentially you're filling 5 or 6 holes after creating two.

The Sox would require at least one MLB ready arm in both a Sale and Quintana trade, as well as several other pieces. So they'll plug those spots. If you trade Sale and Q, competing is out the window and you give your new guys a shot.

And who knows, we might find something.

That's not the only reason. Just flat out poor scouting helps.

That is key to the whole thing. If you deal BOTH Q and Sale we are talking about filling multiple needs and adding much needed depth to thin farm system.

I am still very reluctant to let Hahn/KW run a true rebuild. I almost feel they have had their chance over the past 8 years and blew it. Let someone else take charge of this new direction.

On the flip side, even if you're getting the right players, half of them still won't pan out.

More than half. The Sox will destroy their development

With our scouts and current upper management, I'll be surprised if 20% of them pan out, hence my desire for a new GM to run this rebuild (if that is indeed what their doing) I am still pretty skeptical that they will go down this path.

2019 could look something like this:

CF - Benitendi

RF - Eaton

2B - Moncada

C - Lucroy

DH - Collins

1B - Abreu

3B - Devers

SS - Anderson

LF - Pederson

Rotation

Fernandez

Urias

Rodon

Fulmer

Shields

Bullpen

Burdi

Jones

Other s*** yet to be determined

Trade Q to LAD for Urias and Joc Pederson

Trade Sale to Boston for Benitendi, Moncada, Devers, and 2 lower level prospects.

Trade Fraizer, Melky, Robertson, Duke, Lawrie, etc for lower level prospects - a lot of pieces that will make up a bullpen.

2018 - Sign Lucroy

2019 - Sign Jose Fernandez

Lawrie out of tonight's contest with no apparent injury.

You are really counting on multiple rookies to make an impact all at the same time. That usually doesn't work out well.

Yea... They'd have other assets from the other trades not spelled out, would have one or two years to evaluate the young unproven guys in the majors, and would have plenty of room in their budget to add as necessary via free agency.
