Thoughts keep entering my head that both should be in Sox spring training getting significant playing time. I know it's irrational but with some prospects it's just not rushing them when they are so talented. Other organizations have had guys produce at 20 years old .Why not the Sox ? I know the plan is to get another year with a good draft pick and under no circumstances rush any of these guys but Moncada is up and most likely stays up . To me that means the clock is ticking on competing asap.

Except we're not the Royals with all the players set to hit free agency simultaneously.

 

We have two clearly defined groups of talent that are roughly two years or two and 1/2 years apart.

Those #s are insane.

At a bare minimum you give Kopech a couple months in AAA to start next year. But honestly at this point, I fully expect Kopech in the rotation by the second half of 2018, which means by opening day 2019 our rotation could be pretty ready to make a run at things.

 

Jimenez is much tougher to peg IMO. He's been absolutely awesome this year, but I typically like to see some AA success before I feel confident they're a year away or less from reaching the pros. But the elite guys do move fast and I have no reason to think a prospect with as well rounded of an offensive game as Jimenez will struggle against more advanced pitching.

Birmingham is where offense goes to die so if he crushes it there then I'm booking Cooperstown tickets.

Basabes power has been absent but he has been making better contact and walking more since July.

Kopech is already one of the top 5 pitchers in the organization imo. With both of these guys I think you see what's happening with the organization come June or so next year. I have no problem keeping both of them down in the minors until 2019, I also have no problem getting both of them to the majors sometime mid next year. I know people don't want to rush things but these two guys are timeline changers as far as the rebuild goes.

On Zavala, nice to see him adjust to better pitching in High A. Not as many HRs as in Low A, but striking out less and walking more. Plus six HRs in 127 ABs is still rather strong from a catcher.

 

I think his jump this year has been the most intriguing development of all of our minor league players. Will be interesting to see him in Double-A next year, getting the majority of catcher starts, as I do not think Collins should be promoted until he can consistently hit High-A pitching.

It's a joke that Pipeline does not have Zavala in our Top 30. At least Future Sox has him pegged at # 27 in out composite list.

Regardless of stats you keep eloy and Kopech down until 2019. Kopech needs to build innings up more anyway. Don't start the clock on them

They should promote Eloy and Sebastian after today, and bring Call back up to High A.

Why though? You wouldn't get an extra year of service time that way, so why not call him if he's proven he's ready.

Why let him waste the mileage of his arm building up innings in the minors if he's proven ready for MLB. The strategy should be to promote him when he's ready, and then let him get challenged at the MLB level and make adjustments. It may be in June, July or August of next year, not necessarily waiting for a September callup to the pen. He should be ready for a 150-160 inning season next year if all goes well.

Really looking forward to seeing how he pitches in one of the worst parks in the minors for pitchers.

I have come around putting Kopech in bigs for innings 120-160 next year if he's doing well. Performance should be rewarded.

 

I worried a guy like him who pushes himself physically could cause get in trouble going too hard if up in majors to prove he could finish season strong. But Seeing him get better as he reached an innings limit double his career makes me just think this kid is special.

 

Next year, goal 1 for me is health and getting him ready for 2019. But he can do that in majors.

If the goal is for him to be a full time contributor in 2019 he will need to spend a lot of time (2 or 3 months) in the majors next year. I see no point in preserving his service time....he's a pitcher. Not only that a pitcher with huge velocity. If he excels in ST and Charlotte I wouldn't have a problem with a May callup.

Also, I think there is a pretty strong case to be made that Kopech is the Sox Best prospect. Better than Robert, Jimenez and even Moncada. The only thing I think that can stop Kopech from being an absolute ace is injury.

Plus you don't waste service time calling him up next year after Super 2. It's the same as a September callup. If he's blazing down AAA he deserves the promotion and the practice.

Keeping guys down longer than necessary doesn't really make sense at this point. If Kopech does in AAA what he's doing in AA, he'll be in the majors at some point next season. I think there's a solid chance that Kopech and Eloy end the 2018 season with the Sox and they absolutely should if ready.
