I like this idea. I still think the Sox have less than a 5% chance to actually sign Harper or Machado. Maybe thinking outside of the box makes sense here. Ideas:

• clause to make top 5-10 paid player in mlb, or top 3 OF in the league for a duration in the contract
• deferred revenue over a time period
• HEAVILY front-loaded contract to the tune of something silly like $60mm in year one when we likely won't compete - then like $30mm for years 2-5 with opt-out.
• ownership/equity stake in the sox
• attendance clause/escalator - I think Encarncion had one of these in Cleveland
• other?
