Hawk fired LaRussa in mid-1986.

OK, I forgot that was a mid season firing.  I know he managed the A's in '86 at some point.

  • This was over 30 years ago.  Statute of limitations is up.  C'mon Black Jack. Seems a guy is trying to make himself relevant again, and I am no fan of LaRussa. But this is ridiculous.

I will say, I have no idea what camera's were good enough in the 1980's to zoom in from the outfield stands into the fingers of a catcher... But I don't know why Jack would make this up; well, he does

  • Well he never actually played for LaRussa so

Yes, the A’s almost immediately hired him.

Ahh, you're right. He was drafted in 84 and 87. Regardless, he was on the team like 6 months after LaRussa left. You're acting like he had no communication with the players that played with LaRussa.

I'm not acting about anything.    McDowell is talking as if he was full witness of the cheating, he was't even there.   Going by pure hearsay.

LaRussa also said he would be willing to deliberately forfeit games during the 1981 split season if it would help another team win both halves but put the Sox in the playoff as the wildcard. It wasn't cheating per se but showed he was willing to game the system, even if not in the spirit of authentic competion.

Yeah, if true, no way he didn't take this with him to StL

Also, this tells me all the people getting all sanctimonious and shitting all over the astros are in for a rough couple weeks.

I thought the Sox doing that kind of stuff in the 80‘s was common knowledge, I heard about it decades ago.

No, he didn't talk like that. I'm pretty sure he is assuming his teammates who told him this wouldn't make up something like that out of nowhere.

That was a whole lot of sucking in the late 80s while knowing what pitches were coming.  Yikes.

Was just gonna say the same thing...

this made me lol

But McDowell never played for larussa.....larussa was gone in 86. Jack came up late 87

Yet he's still in the game making half a million.

How is he salty? Because he doesn't like to see cheaters prospering off the game they are cheating?

McDowell is very bitter toward MLB for the way he perceives he was treated.

These stories could go on for years.

First of all, LaRussa wasn't here in the late 80's. He was fired halfway through 1986. Before McDowell was up.....He didn't come up until 1987 after LaRussa was gone. So he never played for LaRussa. McDowell's memory sounds like it's playing tricks on him.

How can you ask how he is salty? He was not part of the organization during the time in which he is speaking so he has second hand knowledge and is speaking as if he was part of the process. It would be somewhat credible if he was int eh organization when this happened or explained how it was handed down from LaRussa to the organization and carried forward to his time.

He is failing to tell this part of the story which is pretty important.

What?

The 1986 and 1987 rosters shared like 90% of the roster. McDowell was teammates with those players. Clearly from his time with the team and organization, and with those players, he learned this and is stating it. I have no idea why anyone thinks that because he didn't play that exact year that he could have no idea what was going on.

I hate that my team is involved in this in any way.

This is not a big deal for the Sox at all. It looks worse for LaRussa.  If they were trying to use those low-def cameras back in the day to cheat, no wonder they sucked.

Aaron Rowand probably used roids and I don't care one bit
