The craziest part is the Senate is 64-35 for the GOP despite Dems winning by 190,000 votes overall in 2018.  Must be the most extreme example of gerrymandering in modern political history, at least on a statewide basis.

Concerns about what is now known to be the novel coronavirus pandemic were detailed in a November intelligence report by the military's National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI), according to two officials familiar with the document’s contents.

The report was the result of analysis of wire and computer intercepts, coupled with satellite images. It raised alarms because an out-of-control disease would pose a serious threat to U.S. forces in Asia -- forces that depend on the NCMI’s work. And it paints a picture of an American government that could have ramped up mitigation and containment efforts far earlier to prepare for a crisis poised to come home.

"Analysts concluded it could be a cataclysmic event," one of the sources said of the NCMI’s report. "It was then briefed multiple times to" the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s Joint Staff and the White House.

From that warning in November, the sources described repeated briefings through December for policy-makers and decision-makers across the federal government as well as the National Security Council at the White House. All of that culminated with a detailed explanation of the problem that appeared in the President’s Daily Brief of intelligence matters in early January, the sources said. For something to have appeared in the PDB, it would have had to go through weeks of vetting and analysis, according to people who have worked on presidential briefings in both Republican and Democratic administrations.

The crazy part is that we didn’t really hear much about it in Wuhan until around the 15th-17th of January...there were just lots of rumors flying around about a SARs-like virus.   But yeah, it makes sense that this goes all the way back to late November/early December.

Dr. Li Wenliang first started sharing his concerns on December 30th, so they managed to keep the secret for another two weeks before it exploded as an international news story the week of January 19th (quarantine began on January 23rd.) 

Gary Dell'Abate's father in law died of COVID last week. He was on the air this morning talking about how he went into the hospital on like March 14th and died April 2. They were never allowed to go see him and he was alone the whole time. At the beginning a nurse would help facetime but that ended fast.

They won't be able to have a funeral for him. He said they will drive to the cemetery and have to sit in their cars the whole time.

Sounds awful.

It is terrible and I wonder if the idiots in Washington realize what people are going through. Losses like this are always hard, but they are even harder when a grieving family can't lean on other family and friends for comfort.  We are living in fear and anxiety right now and we are getting no help from the powers that be. I have a BA in Political Science and thought I would pursue a career in politics. I didn't because I became convinced it is not a honorable profession. I am more convinced of that now.

This was extremely hard to read...sounds like a similar story.   And Gary was worth millions of dollars, diseases don’t discriminate.

 

Crossing 13,000.   Btw, Wuhan isn’t open.  It’s limited to essential factories and workers, and those needing to leave the city by train, plane and bus for work in other provinces after an interminable 76 days.   Majority of small businesses and restaurants still shut down.

Good. Banks are offering mortgage assistance so there should be something that mandates rent assistance.

Of course, that’s based on maintaining current social distancing through the first week of June.

Also, a majority, 60% wouldn’t be comfortable going back to work at end of the month, 37% would...falling along pretty strict partisan lines.   Early blip or surge on approval for Federal government response has swung from 43% to 55% disapproval over the last two polls.

A lot of places have moratoriums on foreclosures and evictions. And given that courts are mostly closed, there isn't much landlords can do.

Cruise lines are absolutely horrendous for the environment. They are about bad as it gets.

So ... both Singapore and South Korea have shut down in response to a second wave (S Korea not a full shutdown, shut down bars and restaurants).

Singapore full shutdown.

Both are the right thing to do, and both have avoided mass death on their populations.

But yeah...this will not be rolling, and whatever bills pass need to not just be one-offs, they need to literally create triggers to consistently be available so local authorities can act based on whats on the ground.

And two more from the same nursing home, I believe that brings that outbreak to ten. New law in Texas forbids employees from working at more than one nursing home.

That is going to create some big problems.  A lot of homes use temp agencies to bring people in when short staffed.  Especially with COVID related illnesses, there will be homes that can't adequately staff up, and dangerously so.

So far none of the political leaders in our country have shown an interest in these sorts of mechanisms or in safeguarding our elections and our right to vote come November.
