What is wrong with Moncada? Is it an oblique, a ham string , knee or hip, or something else?

Babe Ruth's first few games in the majors have shown exactly what we should have expected from him:  An interesting pitching prospect that really can't hit.  As I write this Ruth has been involved in

Looks legs from his movements.

Sounds a bit like Ricky wants him to play through the pain

A very nice way way of saying, suck it up, everyone has issues playing everyday.  There's a difference between soreness, pain, hurt and injured. Everyone is sore and hurt during the daily grind of baseball.

An unknown variable variable here though is the long term effects of his COVID infection. However he seems to have had these issues before.

Yes since Covid can affect circulation. He maybe needs a specialist to check him out.

Cardiovascular issues are in the younger population mostly related to myocarditis which hopefully they checked for before they allowed him back to play. This can also increase if he had predisposing factors like hyperlipidemia.

I was thinking more like the fatigue factor. Chronic fatigue seems to be a lasting effect on many of the patients even those that were asymptomatic in the beginning.

Sounds like Ricky is hinting that Moncada may be soft and non clutch ?

Depends whether he’s hurt or not. If he’s hurt, he should be on the DL. If he’s sore, he needs to suck it up and play better. He’s had breaks. He had 3 days off in a row before the Cardinals series.

Id probably try to give him until Friday. We will likely have Madrigal back tonight and Danny can cover 3B against the woeful Pirates for 2 days.

Hurt or injured, it doesn’t really matter right now.  It’s clearly impacted his defense, something it never did last year.

I think that is what Renteria is trying to say. He isn't injured and needs to not let little things effect his play.

How long till the Sox hire Delmonico to work in the FO?

But it’s impacting his lateral movement, which I don’t think is a mental thing

I have no idea as i'm not in the clubhouse. However, mentally feeling drained because of nagging issues can slow everything down. also, i don't think Renteria is saying it's all mental. He's saying he does have lingering physical issues but so does everyone. So he needs to play through them and not let the little soreness effect his play. At least that's my interpretation of the comments.

If he can't he needs to go on the IL but no one thinks his issues are that severe.

If moncada is really injured I doubt that decision is on ricky, that would be a medical department/front office decision.

Of course the manager wants his star players to play but in the end the medical staff will make the decision and I trust them that they are able to judge that.

It's usually a combination of the 3. I would like to believe that the medical staff has the final say but unfortunately, that isn't always the case. This is why I said that no one thinks his issues are that severe otherwise that decision would have been made.

I'm pretty sure the Sox medical staff has looked Moncada over several times. Ricky made that statement because Moncada is going through soft tissue soreness and aches. Some people can handle it more than others.

Yup, sounds like there's nothing diagnosed and he's dealing with general fatigue - possibly exasperated by COVID even though people say "he wasn't reallly sick" - and you need to push through that fatigue to build that muscle base back up.

Yup, this was my thought and I also think he just needs to push through it but there's not a lot of science supporting that yet.

If he wasn't "hurt" there's no way Ricky lets him jog to first base on those plays. He's clearly banged up and sore, but it sounds like it's nothing that playing through can cause further damage.

I agree with this. If Madrigal is back, play Mendick at 3B in Pittsburgh and give him 4 days off.

It isn't a bad plan to try to turn this isn't 4 days off for Yoan if Nick is back.  Even if nothing is super wrong with YM, maybe the days of fix him mentally.

I know personal examples rarely apply to major leaguers, but I will boldly plow on with one anyway.

I've always had back issues that led to soreness and pain, but I could play through it. I"d be fine to start a season but by midseason it would be constant. I thought I was still playing at 100% through it, but once I managed to get rid of it I realized that I had developed a mental hitch. My first steps, my quick reaction moves, all of these were slowed because I was basically wincing in anticipation of the pain I was about to experience, and that bracing of my muscles creates a tension that is antithetical to quick movement. The pain itself wasn't that bad - if I focused on not tensing up I could probably make one play just as well as without the pain. But having that pain as a constant can really wear on you mentally and definitely have physical effects.

But again, we're talking high school ball here so no access to all of the trainers and physical therapists and whatnot he has, so no clue if the experience transfers.

Yep. Especially when it's only 2 games and against a bad team.
