Burdi wasn't a first round pick. He was a compensation round pick. Collins was the Sox first round pick that year.

Yes Burdi was a compensation 1st round pick, but the fact is baseball sites refer to it as a 1st round pick. The fact is he was picked before the 2nd round. It's semantics with the weird MLB draft rules, but he is a first round pick regardless of the term you want to attach to it.

Like I said in the other thread, it looks like Yermin was starting to get it back, but the need for healthy position players was too much with the injured, plus the walking injured on this team.  Need

In one month he got a bobble head, a burger named after him, and a beer. If that’s his cup of coffee at the big leagues at least he made it count.

Yermin just needs his confidence back and make some adjustments in AAA.

April showers. Jake makes a better Burger than the Yerminator.

Agreed! Maybe like lose some major lb's and get in better physical shape. Also maybe work with someone qualified in off season to get better at being a catcher.

Now the DH spot opens up for a few other guys.

Agreed...and Mercedes has built "some" trade value.

That's not really true in 2021.  Even if you price him at somewhere close to his April peak, no one puts a large price on DH's.  That just doesn't happen anymore unless you are at the superstar level.

You have the entire NL to sell to next year in all probability.  He will have some value IMO.

Maybe as a 2nd or 3rd piece in a deal, but his lack of positional ability will just kill his value.  If he could catch at even a slightly below average ability, he'd be an MLB starter, somewhere.

Why do so many think April Yermin was the "fake" Yermin and Yermin who has been in a slump is the real Yermin. Obviously he is not as good as his April numbers were but he is also much better than he has been. Even if he rakes in AAA I don't think they will call him back up. The White Sox management never wanted him on the team and took forever to finally give him a chance and now they send him down after his first slump. You would think he would get a little more of a leash considering how great he hit in April but apparently not.

Not for a slump lasting in the months and not weeks…if he gets really serious about getting back up, working on his catching and physical conditioning, he’ll be back in the majors, somewhere.

So is Yermin still participating in the home run derby at the all star game?

Yermin, who has a burger named after him, was replaced on the roster by Burger.

It's rare for any RH hitter to put up the kind of month Yermin did in MLB because of the proliferation of RHP .  Luis Robert started out great then his slump was just as bad as Mercedes but he still provided a great deal of defensive and base running value. Being older and not having a position to play means they had to replace him. You can't carry 1 one dimensional player whose 1 dimension is broken.

Vaughn is another rookie who has struggled against RHP all year but not to the depths that Merecedes or Robert did.

If you are considered a key piece to the organization's future you are allowed to play your way out of slumps and adjust to MLB on the fly while the team is still winning . Vaughns case  is different than Robert's and Mercedes in that before this season he had not advanced beyond A ball in the minors and much of his development was conducted in Schamburg last year when there was no 2020 season for him.

The general consensus on Vaughn is that he will be a special hitter and needs time to hit RHP well. He already hits quite well against LHP. The slew of injuries in the OF has forced the Sox to play him out of position and into the lineup .

Neither the April or slumping Mercedes is the real Mercedes. It's somewhere in between. There is such a vast difference that figuring out where that mid level is and seeing it consistently is problematic when you don't play a position and are not regarded as a future corner stone of the organization. I never actually thought he would get a shot with the Sox or much of one with another team. It was great he got that chance and did the most with it and unfortunate it could not be sustained .

He was feast of famine in a position that didn't allow for famine unless the Sox paid $10M a year for him like they did Edwin Encarnacion.

What? No he hasn't.  He's an AL only player as he can only really play DH. And his value tanked when the league adjusted to him.

And why would the Sox trade him to a contender in the chance it comes back to bite them?

I have already said the NL will approve the DH at the next bargaining session IMO.  That makes quite a few potential customers.
