The fact that competetive balance picks exist is still ridiculous

  • It's necessary now, man. Lets see what they do tomorrow. For example, if they pay a guy $150K tomorrow, it costs $25K against pool. If they did that today, it counts as $150K. There are reasons for do

  • Again, everyone taken in rounds 1-10 is signing or the team wouldn't select them

The Tigers brilliant maneuvers of being in the correct market got them Ty Madden.

yeah, exactly. Do the white sox draft but also add Madden or Petty. It's absurd.

Do you not think that in order for small markets with much less possibility for market revenue should get some advantages to try to compete with the large markets?

Or should it be those with the most money have all the advantages?

Binelas stays home and goes to the Brewers

Binelas to the Brewers.  Hometown kid.

So the Hitters program has produced Lux, Rortvedt, Kelenic, O Miller, Vuckovich, N Miller and Binelas.  That's not a fluke.

They get plenty of advantages already and getting multiple extra draft picks every year is a huge advantage, and the threshold for when you go from small with compensation to big enough for compensation is not nearly bore out in the execution of this. It's a hamfisted compromise made by owners that don't think the draft is that big of a deal.

two more til white sox.

White Sox on the clock. (Cubs just drafted Drew Gray)

What other advantages? Seems to me that if they can't compete monetarily that providing them with better access to talent is a good alternative.

The threshold is probably tough to figure out.

DrewGray to the Cubs.  Good pick. Super athletic and he can really spin it.

Maybe. Hard to consider Detroit or the St. Louis Cardinals to be small markets, though.

Sean Burke

Maryland RHP

Notes:

Ht: 6-6 | Wt: 230 | B-T: R-R
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 21.6

BA Grade: 50 | Risk: High
Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45

Burke was a talented basketball player in high school and a projection pitching prospect thanks to a lean 6-foot-5 frame and an exciting fastball/curveball combination. He’s filled out that frame over three years with Maryland and is now listed at 6-foot-6, 230 pounds, though he did miss the 2019 season due to Tommy John surgery. Burke worked an excellent 22.2 innings in the shortened 2020 season, striking out 35 batters and walking 11 while posting a 1.99 ERA. Burke is an impressive athlete for his size and this spring continued to show off the fastball/curveball combination that had scouts excited back in high school. Early this spring, Burke was sitting around 92-93 mph but that dipped over the course of the season. At his best, he’s run his fastball up to 97-98. The pitch reportedly has impressive spin characteristics up in the zone, which makes pairing it with a mid-70s downer curveball a good combination. The curveball has been Burke’s best swing-and-miss pitch this season and works best as a chase pitch as well. Burke also throws a slider in the low 80s, which scouts have said has improved this spring to the point where it’s his most frequently thrown offspeed pitch. Burke also throws a low-80s changeup that’s mostly straight, but the usage is minimal. Despite a low-effort delivery and athleticism, Burke’s strikes have been scattered and inconsistent, with a career walk rate close to 5.0 per nine innings.

Ranked 53rd on BA.

Sean Burke.  No surprise there. They were all over him.

Another guy rated way higher than the spot he was picked.  MLB had him at 75, BA 53rd.

Sean Burke, RHP, U of Maryland.

Yeah, I guess it would be interesting to see how that's defined. They are definitely small compared to NY, LA or Chicago.

Dylan Dodd is a 3rd rounder.  What a great story.

Hope they are right with his arm, but guy with good fastball and curve and huge size is a good pick to me.

If sox can teach him an effective change that could be a great pick.

Atlanta loves the SEMO area.

Are we surprised Sox didn't go more underslot there?

Pretty sure their x-checker lives down that way.
