If Rodon's arm is about to go topsy-turvy who better to replace him than Scherzer ? That last outing by Rodon was a bit concerning. Not sure if he is trying to preserve his arm on his own by throwing in the low 90's in the 1st 4 innings or if it's a sign that he's going through a dead arm period or something even more concerning. It's a long shot without thinking Scherzer prefers the west coast anyway.

His team didn't really back him up but that's what he was saying. Rodon's been 94-96 in starts and then got up to 99 in the last inning of an outing.

I don't believe it was a significant dropoff, but Rodon did have his lowest average fastball velocity of the year on Saturday and never got up to 99. Outings from 2019/20 provided for context - seems technically true, but right at the margins.
