Dirty, did you have to shower after participating in the game thread last night?

Lol. Nah.

I understand the point of gamethreads. It's cathartic for people to grouse and yell about things with like-minded folk. More power to them. I don't like to steep myself in too much negativity though. Just a life approach I guess.

But man, the whole Dallas Keuchel experience and its trappings just enrages something in me. It's like every 5th day we get a painful reminder about the front office's incompetence in the offseason combined with the a notion of them being "ok" with punting games after a horribly underwhelming start to the season. Blah.

Looks like Colas left the game for WS. Hopefully it's nothing injury related.

Really hoping he just has to use the bathroom.

2 HR night for Hackenberg

It's probably not even worth mentioning/no one else cares, but I think McClure has transitioned officially to being a reliever now. So much for him being potential rotation depth, not that his performance in Charlotte has warranted it.

Question for the more minor league knowledgeable:

Davis Martin is on the 40 man and showed nicely in his lone MLB start.  How has he looked since going back down?

Sorry originally too negative for these threads. I'll be more careful in the future.

Colas was 0-3 with 3 ks .  I’m hoping for a simple gi bug or something

I'm not sure where to post this in the forums, but I will put it here. I've been noticing both Charlotte in AAA and the Birmingham in AA are having terrible seasons. The biggest glaring concern is the horrific pitching from both levels.

Charlotte Knights - Intl League - 20 teams
W-L Record - 16-30 - Last place

Team Pitching Stats

ERA                6.02 - 20th
Hits per/inn 1.05 - 20th
HR's                 84 - 20th
WHIP            1.54 - 17th
BA                 .287 - 20th

Birmingham Barons - Southern League - 8 teams
W-L Record - 15-28 - Last place

Team Pitching Stats

ERA               5.98 - 8th
Hits per/inn 1.14 - 8th
HR's                 62 - 8th
WHIP            1.66 - 8th
BA                .287 - 8th

Evidently there are some really good hitters at these two levels, but the pitching seems to be god awful!

I guess my concerns or questions are why are we so weak at these two levels?

1. Has Hahn taken his eye off the minors, concentrating too much on the rebuild at the major league level?
2. Is the Director of Scouting Mike Shirley over his head and a change is needed?
3. Is Chris Getz, the Asst to GM and Player Development Director over his head and a change is needed?
4. Are the pitching coaches in the minors weak and guilty of not developing the talent that the FO drafted or signed?
5. Are the Sox Scouts weak and incompetent? Do they have the knowledge and the Sox FO blueprint for the type of pitchers the scouts need to look for and recommend to be drafted? Btw, keep in mind the Cease, Giolito, Lynn and Kopech were not drafted by the Sox.

The other successful MLB teams like the Yankees, Rays and Dodgers to name a few, all are winning at the MLB level, but also have successful minor league organizations.

There is a huge problem in our minors, when MLB recently released their updated top 100 prospects, and the Sox did not have one single player on it.

Hostetler took an overwhelming number of older college players leaving a very old system. At the same time the white Sox were in the penalty box for the Robert signing for intl, and signed very small classes.

Then pandemic hit and only five rounds could be drafted. The number of players graduating.

Shirley began drafting younger classes and Paddy has gone after bigger fish and not added huge classes since.

That has left a huge chasm between the next wave of prospects which you can see in the Charlotte and bham starting rotations which are filled with milb free agents.

But after that there is a decently better wave.

So those are some of the reasons but not excuses. Hostetler was a disaster which is inexcusable when we needed big hits from the bigger budgets from having a rebuilding bad team.

The Sox being categorized as big market team gives them less resources in the draft and intl. because in theory we can have larger payrolls. But because Hostetler and Hahn are now heading our MLB scouting, we are soending tens of millions on older bad players, which we could easily fill with players like Yolbert and Lenyn.

Going by how many top prospects have struggled this season, it’s no sure thing Sanchez or Sosa could hold their own or that TLR would play them…although the counterargument is that we did have Yermin and Sheets getting major playing time as rookies in a competitive season (without Vaughn’s pedigree).

Those are valid reasons. But the Sox need to fix it. However you explain or rationalize the current state of affairs in the minors; we are screwed for the future, unless big changes occur in how we are drafting, signing and developing talent in the minors.

The fact is Shirley and Paddy need to be on the same page. They both should be able to go after both older and younger talent. Shirley should still go get 3rd year collage players and not just young high school talent. It worked for Chris Sale, Vaughn and TA. Yet Shirley needs to still make sure we get young high school potential stars. There needs to be a good mix! The same goes for Paddy. He can go score on Abreu, Robert, Colas etc., but he still needs to get the young international teenagers signed. This direction needs to come from Hahn.

You also can't convince me there is a lack of quality coaches at the minor league level. Not all successful MLB teams hit successfully on every draft pick or intl signing. Maybe some of those winning MLB teams have the right solid coaches who can develop their talent and improve on their player weaknesses.

As far as the Sox being categorized as a big market team when in reality they are a small market team with less resources is 100 percent correct and a huge problem! However it's absurd the Sox organization conducts business this way. It's only because we have a demented and ignorant cheap owner. It's ridiculous that a small market team like San Diego has a much higher payroll than the Sox.

Josh HarrisOn had a .580 OPS.

All of the Central teams are between 18th to 26th in the attendance standings.

The Padres are fourth at nearly 37,000.  Multiply 16,000 x 21-22 games plus parking souvenirs concessions.

Not insignificant.

The crazy thing is Hahn could have owned Chicago, but we now have a dysfunctional mess.  Whereas the Padres absolutely imploded going 22 games under .500 to end the season as everyone knows…but their fans were still hyped about the future and believed in the vision that was laid out, which starts with having massive talent depth on the starting pitching front.

And they’re STILL likely a WC team because of the Dodgers’ dynasty.  But the fans are still excited and optimistic.  They also have talent left in their farm system (to add yet another outfielder) and Tatis/Abrams in reserve.

(Also, Twins’ fans are a bit like 2012 Sox fans.  They don’t 100% yet believe.  Bad weather, of course, but 18,120 fans per game for a first place team, and up by 5 games approaching early June, is crazy unless you are TB or Oakland.)

Yes, and surely Pollock’s isn’t much higher.  And maybe they have no choice if the asking price for Drury is too much.  But hard to expect either of those two guys to come up and hit the ground running with so much development time lost.  That’s especially the case for Colas next year.  We run the risk of being stuck with another year of AJ, and unfortunately it’s not Pierzynski.
