LaRussa anthem story making national headlines

Be careful.

Sure.  But to me, Francis Scott Key's words are about resistance and perseverance in the face of superior forces...with the odds heavily against them.  It can have military implications, but there's no exclusivity. And I learned in high school that even if I found it personally distasteful, I even had the right to burn an American flag in protest.  And that it was even my duty as a citizen to protest and continue to strive for a stronger union.

We follow sports as an escape from the rest of the BS in the world, I hate how politics has now become part of the sports world.

It would be great if he tried making national headlines by competently managing a World Series contending team.

Regardless of my feelings about Kapler, Kaepernick, or LaRussa - I would suggest that maybe with where his team is sitting in the standings the right call when asked this question is to express sympathy for the victims but say that he’s not going to comment more because this team needs to focus on baseball.

Sure, Chicago is not San Francisco...but none of the ten other managers quoted so far have sought to make headlines.

So by know your environment you want to encourage him to lie and say things he doesn't believe ? You've been in China too long.

See Balta’s comment above.  You just know he couldn’t resist.  I just wish he spent an equal amount of time constructing the lineup in a way that would maximize already limited run production.

I mean…Hahn speaks all the time with the media and yet never says anything memorable unless he’s endeavoring too hard to defend himself.  You can talk in a truthful way without revealing anything if you so desire.

Finding the person who is most disconnected from this team IS the problem.  His politics are just a symptom of this disconnection.

We're not free when to stand or not to stand isn't a choice.

Y'all can insult my son who is serving by not standing, that's your right and I will support it.

I can see this dude sitting in the dugout fuming over something like this, not paying attention to the shit show on the field that is his team.

He’s certainly making Ozzie Guillen more palatable to at least 30-40% of the fanbase.

At least Ozzie is more fun and has more energy.

I read the ESPN.com version and Tony didn't say anything bad.

The main part about him. ...

"La Russa reiterated his respect for Kapler's intentions but thinks his form of protesting is disrespectful to servicemen and women.

"Some of their courage comes from what the flag means to them and when they hear the anthem," La Russa said. "You need to understand what the veterans think when they hear the anthem or see the flag. And the cost they paid and their families. And if you truly understand that, I think it's impossible not to salute the flag and listen to the anthem."

The Giants' manager said today he may not protest on Memorial Day BTW.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34005391/san-francisco-giants-manager-gabe-kapler-suspend-protest-national-anthem-memorial-day

BTW if the Giants manager is going to speak negatively about the USA, other sports figures have the right to counter his points and point out some positive things about the USA. Free country. I think Tony should resign cause his team is grossly awful but I don't mind him standing up for the military and saluting those who gave their lives for our freedom. Peace out.

1.  No comment is an acceptable answer sometimes.

2.  How about just doing a better job managing the Chicago White Sox.

It also wouldn't be as much of a story were the White Sox 5-7 games up in first place...

It's more insulting to your son and our veterans how they are treated by this country when they come home. The lack of benefits, terrible VA system, the lack of mental health care... Nobody is insulting active servicemen or women by not standing or taking the field for the anthem. It's a message to the politicians. The same politicians responsible for how vets are treated once they're not useful anymore. The same politicians with the blood of school children on their hands.

Does he even know why Kapler is protesting?

The odds of him having read Kapler’s explanation are pretty much slim and none.

Tony may be interested to learn that the flag wasn't created for the military.

Actually it was.  The 1st (unofficial) national flag was created and raised in 1776 to celebrate the newly formed Continental Army.

The season would be a lot more interesting if the HoF called to inform him that a record of less than 86-76 would cause his status in Cooperstown to be reconsidered.

I’m willing to bet that if you called his office number and told him this that he would believe it.

This is the lamest take of all. Anytime someone tries to move this country forward,  it is obvious they want communism.

Or are socialists, etc.

For teachers, for example, we are all CRT fanatics and "groomers" requiring hotlines across the country to keep us in check.

In China if you did what Kapler did you would be summarily sent to prison.

Kapler has said numerous times that this was about living up to the standards his father taught him about a US citizen's inherent responsibility to protest in order to address societal wrongs/grievances. I guess nobody picks on Steve Kerr for that same reason because his father was assassinated at the hands of a gunman.

Your take is no one is insulting them. My take is different. What makes yours or mine any more correct? I support your right to sit. I have students who sit for the US Pledge but stand for the Texas Pledge and moment of silence. It's their choice. I have others that sit and play games on their phone the entire time.

It's an interesting question really. If I describe you in a way you claim is an insult and I say it isn't, are you less insulted? I live in Military City USA and know how most active and retired duty members feel. I honor their feelings by standing.

It's also similar to places of worship. Walk into a synagogue and cover your head out of respect, walk into a Christian church and uncover your head out of respect. I guess some folks might want to use that time and place as an opportunity to protest and claim it isn't disrespectful. More power to them.

I'll continue to stand for the hundreds of millions of Americans that make this a great country while supporting those that choose to sit for the thousands that make it bad.

Can we support the individuals serving while also not condoning the actions of the corrupt imperialist nation that sends young women & men to their deaths for the profit of the elite few?  I, a veteran who served, honor your kid's service, because he probably served for the same reasons I did, but also recognize the very system that exploits our servitude for futile ends and then leaves us to fend for ourselves afterwards, irreparable trauma and all.  Choosing to not stand for the anthem is not an insult to your son's or my service to this dying nation.  We can "support the troops" while conscientiously objecting to the horrors this nation has wrought upon the world we live in.

Unequivocally, No.
