This. Grandal has been brutal this season, but he was bargain the first 2 years of his contract with his production. To date, Yaz had been paid what he’s worth. The balance of the deal is indeed looking rough if this is what he is moving forward tho.

I don't know why teams don't frontload contracts of older players. Makes it easier to trade or DFA them if they go way downhill like Yaz has.

Grandal caught 32 games in 2020. He missed a lot of time in 2021. He has either been injured or horseshit this entire season.

Catchers beyond 30, beyond a few exceptions (out of thousands in MLB history) drop off really quickly. Grandal's heavy playing time leading up to 2020 made it even more of a certainty his health would not hold up over four seasons.

Hahn paid $73M for five great months, and seven injured and/or horseshit months. 29 other GMs didn't even bother to compete with this offer. Par for the Rick Hahn era.
