He’s getting up there in age.  Honestly, they should probably move him to a bullpen role because he’s running out of time as a SP.

Absolutely bonkers to think that the Sox could be the most improved team in MLB  next year by 21 games and still be a 100-loss team and likely finish as the worst team in baseball.

Some of the original fans of that Burger/Eder trade (few are left defending it at this point) are going to still be talking about his potential all winter long.

Because what else is there left to argue?  You certainly can't cite his statistics, credibly.

I wouldn't mind seeing if they actually could be worse. It's a hell of a challenge. But keep guys in AAA that need the development time and grab some not quite warm bodies from the last chance pile. Bonus if the could play a little banana ball.

I’m of the opinion that they should sign at least one (maybe two) veteran starting pitchers. I wouldn’t be so comfortable going into a season with a rotation this untested, assuming Crochet is dealt before the season. A veteran who can eat innings would be a welcome sight to this team.

Plus if the veteran starter(s) is a good, you can move him at the deadline for more long term assets.

Who would be in the rotation alongside these veterans?

At some point we have to give the young pitchers a shot to develop.  Cannon looks like a solid backend SP pitcher already.  Martin pitched pretty well in his 10 starts.  Burke flashed in a small sample size.  And Thorpe has nothing left to prove in the minors and should be a valuable SP next year if healthy.  Beyond those four, you have 25 year olds in Bush & Nastrini who are running out of time to prove themselves.  Let one of them (or someone like Adams) get some run time before Schultz and perhaps Iriarte are pushing for spots later in the season.  This team is going to be extremely bad next year and IMO we should be more focused on using our playing time to develop young talent from the few areas of strength than to hope we hit the jackpot on some C tier free agents.

Another guy I would like to see them target is Ben Rice.  The Yankees have a ton of decisions to make this off season and if they decide to go a different direction at 1B Rice could be this years Michael Busch.  The Sox tried like hell to get Busch last year but they didn't have the prospects to get a deal done.  This year they have much better depth in the minors and could easily get a deal done for a much needed left handed power bat.

Even if Eder flames out, it was always the right call to trade Burger. He's a 0-1 WAR DH, for a team that was going to lose 100 games and then lost 121 the following season there was no reason at all to keep him at his peak value.

This is exactly the type of move I’d like to see for 1B.

It’s imperative that this hire plays out better than that one. Venable will have lower expectations to win than Grifol did after inheriting a team supposedly built to compete in the American League Central. Getz is giving Venable a team that’s likely built to lose, but that doesn’t mean Getz won’t feel the pressure. It’s on him to remove the Sox from the state of disarray the rest of baseball sees.

Then they better not keep Vaughn or Sheets because neither one of those guys came close to putting up Burger's numbers of homers RBIs or OPS.

He finished almost 75 ops points ahead of all the hitters who ended the season with the Sox.

1.4 fWAR in 137 games...and wasn't healthy the first 6 weeks playing through an oblique...gives you much closer to a 2 than a 0 when projected over 162.

And still much more cost effective than Jimenez or Vaughn.

It's one of any reasons the Sox have gone from 12th to 30th in fWAR in the last 2-3 years.

 

If you trade Kopech Fedde Burger for Eder Vargas and two limited tools middle infielders...you tend to get worse.

Burke, Thorpe, Martin, and Cannon. Iriarte next man up. Bush and Nastrini might be relievers.

You’re going to need a reliable proven starter who can eat innings to save the bullpen at least.

If it was truly the right call, we would have gotten back a halfway decent player.  Not what is currently a 26 year old pitching “prospect” with a 5+ minor league career ERA.
