CHGO layoffs...

White Sox impacted the most:

“Unfortunately, the White Sox are a really tough team to [cover],” Spano said. “Herb’s incredible. He’s one of the best talents we’ve ever had and a great person. Vinny Duber’s as good of a writer as you’ll find on a beat. But sometimes you feel like you care more about the White Sox than the White Sox care about the White Sox. So that makes it tough.”

  • That's too bad. Duber was actually one of the more objective media people in the industry.  He us a good reporter keeping to the information.

While true, Jerry isn’t free from blame here.  Interest levels are super fucking low because of the incompetence he has allowed to fester for years.

  • f*** that guy for blaming the Sox for it. They also laid off a Bears guy and people in their Denver office.  A week before Christmas.

Jerry Reinsdorf should be forced to sell with the damage he has done

Nice timing right before Christmas.

Hopefully they had a head's up here.

Vinnie was the glue guy of White Sox podcasts that kept them from being meatball central.

I wonder if he'll jump markets or switch sports. I would head the latter since he's a local guy.

Yes he is. Would it be JR's fault if you started a blog or a podcast that didn't work out?

And then their awful owner laid off people a week before Christmas and then had the balls to go on Twitter and say "they are paid through January so no one will need to worry about money through the holidays" in the most tone deaf messaging possible.

Does CHSN have a Sox reporter?

Maybe part of it is that there's less interest in the team and fewer fans are tuning in, but this just seems to be the way things are going. Why have a thoughtful, knowledgeable journalist when you can have a former pro athlete interview his buddy about what his favorite Nike shoe is. I reckon that's what people want to watch/listen to/consume these days, morons they've heard of that used to be good at the sport they like who have nothing interesting to say. Gen Z athletes are also wimps for only wanting to answer softball questions from their friends about their various sponsorships. Roger Angell could never have a career in 2024.

Duber was the consummate professional and too objective...but packing the rhetoric flourishes or panache of Fegan.

Seems like "school/CEO shootings expert" would be a more promising area for journalists.

Pretty sure Chris Rongey has a morning radio show with a female co-host in StL, even that might have more longevity.

Lame. I’ll miss Vinnie… won’t miss Herb.

Vinnie was the smartest one of the 3. I'm shocked they let him go. Out of all the guys they fired, he was definitely the best one.

Fully disagree here.  We have gotten to the point where major publications and local newspapers can’t justify supporting a beat writer for the Sox in the third largest media market in the country.  That’s 100% on Jerry for allowing the product to fall off like this.  So yeah, he’s not to be blamed for firing dudes the week before Christmas, but he’s made it financially unviable for many publications to cover this team.

Herb is entertaining.

Neither funny nor appropriate.

CHGO is neither a major publication or newspaper and both of those things got rid of Sox beat reporters when they were being somewhat successful.

This is just another tale in the long line of “company gets VC money but has no idea how to run a company.”

Including the people who cover the Bears and the other teams?

Did those teams lose 2/3 of their staff?

That's what people are saying. They layoffs weren't isolated to the Sox staff.

It was also across different cities. The Phillies one lost a person, too. Is that from being a bad team?

I didn't realize they were a nationwide organization. I thought they were local because of the CHGO. What is the parent organization?

I looked it up. It's the ALLCITY group. Similar to the Locked on group. I like the locked on better as a while but the Sox and bears were better with CHGO.

I had zero idea either.  I’ve only seen these guys on YouTube once in awhile.
