Which is why the BEST thing for the pitching staff is to bite the bullet offensively and just stick Amaya at SS.

Bergolla's the only other realistic candidate that can handle the position, but is at least a year or two away.

 

They might play Meidroth there to start the season, but that experiment won't last longer than 4-6 weeks before all of his range and arm strength weaknesses are fully exposed for the world to see.

 

REALISTICALLY, if they wanted to save money on Rojas, they could have simply signed Jose Iglesias for SS.

That would have left Vargas/Sosa/Ramos for 3B and and Vargas/Sosa/Meidroth for 2B and then Baldwin would simply have ended up at the jack of all trades guy or got sent down to Charlotte to get everyday at-bats since he was pushed up to the big leagues at least half a year too quickly to fill in a positional gap.

No one is going to be shortstop for more than  4-6 weeks because Montgomery will be back by then.

Is that your heart as a Sox/prospect fan OR as an experienced physical therapist?

Realistically, he's much better off trying to play 3B than SS in terms of the everyday physical demands of that position.

Maybe, but the organization will give him every shot to play at SS.

I don't think that will matter. I think once he shows he's healthy and gets what they feel is enough spring training at bats, he'll be called up. He would be the starting shortstop now if he was healthy.

They could easily be worse this year. They are devoted to failure.

Not sure why you bolded what you did. Iglesias didn't play much SS last year and the Sox would've likely had to paid more for him  than they did for Rojas if they had signed him at the same time.

Pretty sure the whole reason Iglesias lasted as long as he did was because no one wanted to meet his price at his age despite hitting well last year playing mostly 2nd and 3rd. Sox probably checked on him before Rojas.

I actually advocated for Iglesias early in the off season because he probably still could play SS better than most still here vying for the position and because being a Cuban vet who learned to become a better hitter later in his career he might've been a good influence to help Robert  who has run out of Cuban teammates.

I think he has to show he can hit AAA pitching and stay healthy otherwise what does he have to offer?

I actually wanted HaSeong Kim all along but the Rays were suddenly willing to spend on a SS after what they went through with Franco.

Apparently the Sox weren't going to spend over $5M on any one player unless incentives warranted it.

Genuine curiosity....why hasn't Adisyn Coffey gotten a serious look? I don't know much about him but seems he had a great year in the minors last year and in brief looks in spring. Yet he just doesn't seem to be in talks for the roster. I know he's 25. I'm just curious if anyone has anything else has info. Again, don't know much about him.

He has one massive fan here who always has the same question...Him Schoenle and Palette.

That Boyer quote that many fans think what happens on the field is the most important thing really chaps my ass.

It looks like he missed about 10 days so a 15 day IL is reasonable. Thats the job of the utility player to cover.

I just like to try to identify guys who don't get much recognition. The stats speak for themselves and  I think it was their AA pitching coach John Ely who was on the McGuffey podcast raving about those guys.But apparently even at 26 yrs old they'd rather save the younger guys for the 2nd half after trading as many of the veteran relievers with decent 1st half stats.

Yes. Ely seemed kind of baffled they didn't bring him up and give him a look last. Sometimes players just deserve the opportunity when they put in the work and have success. Sox seem to have trouble with that among the thousand other things they're shitty at. 

Coffey is being hurt by Sox desire to churn roster. If they clear some of the guys they have claimed on waivers by midseason, maybe he’ll get a shot. I think he’s earned it.
