I seriously think Carlos Rodon was the last real prospect where this was even an issue. While the Cubs were openly jerking Kris Bryant around, the Sox were trying not to rush Rodon. Boras, who represented both, screamed about Bryant's treatment, while saying publicly they had no problem with the White Sox' plan for Rodon.

This nonsense could be disposed of with a new CBA but you know the owners likely won't agree to that. Neither would the players. It's a negotiated contract. There are a lot of items in the agreement that on the face, might seem like easy issues to take off the table. But if one side really wants that in principle, it becomes a bargaining chip. They whittle away at it, make that last year expensive. They start arbitration earlier for the most egregious examples. The current service time environment has been crafted by both sides for their own particular purposes. Some clauses might be happy accidents for one party, but overall, the owners like the system because it allows them enough control to plan for, while the players like how free agency is set up to limit supply of the high-end players to force up their salaries.

Was one of the best hitters in baseball against LHP for a five year period prior to last year and we just hired one of his previous hitting coaches to oversee our broader hitting. I would assume that they believe they can get him back to form and if not he’s a cheap holder until someone else warrants the spot. I do not like having and Taylor both on the roster though.

Next to zero...the sad part of all this is they could have picked up Taylor or the equivalent of him WHEN THEY ACTUALLY DID TRADE ROBERT for basically major league minimum. (The Padres waited until the end of spring training and got Jose Iglesias in this exact same way.) Now we're committed to Tauchman, Slater and Taylor. Not that anyone's really being blocked...other than Fletcher/Colas/DeLoach/Veras (if you really want to make the argument he's close to ready, or even DJ Gladney.)
