Ishbia increasing minority stake in Sox

Two quotes from Hayes article that you consider "essential."

"People with knowledge of the situation believe Ishbia’s deal with the White Sox comes with an eventual path to take a controlling interest from longtime owner Jerry Reinsdorf."

"However, the White Sox issued a statement denying that the deal comes with provisions for Ishbia to take control."

and the Greenberg article:

"People with knowledge of the discussions believe that the deal will allow Ishbia to take control of the team at some point by buying the shares of longtime owner Jerry Reinsdorf and other partners. But a White Sox official on Friday night disputed that notion, even though it would be unusual for prospective owners to make significant investments for minority shares without the promise of their stakes growing larger."

There was nothing essential stated in either article to help estimate a transition period.

No you’re not correct. Try to keep up. The important parts are Ishbia dropping Twins bid after being really far down the road toward ownership and the Reinsdorf’s approaching Ishbia as the impetus to buy more shares and drop the Twins. Those are the most importabt details. I have no idea when Ishbia might get control of the White Sox. But I’m pretty certain that he didn’t give up the Twins for a coke and a smile and the chance to help Jerry Reinsdorf build a new stadium.

To be honest, the dream is Ishbia coming in, building a beautiful new park at the 78, and having a couple mega free agents to supplement young core.  I love going to the Rate but it’s time for a new,

He could definitely still give up control before he dies...that has nothing to do with capital gains taxes and everything to do with officially designating a new "control person."

Can be done and should be done.

I'm confused about what I'm incorrect about.

Nothing essential was confirmed, and Hayes basically just cited Greenbergs article - he had zero original reporting.

I agree that he is purchasing the team, and never stated otherwise.

We're all just reading tea leaves though and it has nothing to do with reading two articles that said nothing.

There are a handful of people that know what's actually going on with Ishbia buying more shares of the Sox, and none of those people are on this board.  However, it's probably a safe assumption that he wouldn't drop his bid for the Twins if there wasn't a plan in place.  What that plan is, we don't know and most likely won't know until it's executed.  There are now 33 pages of speculation, arguing, and insults, and we're no closer to knowing what's going on.

Greg is actually Greg Ishbia, the little-known sibling of the billionaires.

Hiding in plain sight actually makes more sense than the real story.

probably just assured Ishbia a right of first refusal. estimated transition period thus could be totally unclear rn

the thing i think all can agree on:

The Sox said something to ishbias to make them turn around and drop Minnesota, and it has to have been interesting. Because Minn was going to be full total control around opening day. and because this is not fantasy land you can bet that thing that was said is down on paper.

it's probably that theyve worked something out where jerry can operate the team a few more years and then steps aside

Yeah. He could easily see it as "I'd rather own and control a team in Chicago in whatever, 2/3/4/5 years rather than own the Twins now." He's also only 47.

“Yea Jerry, I will continue to let you pilot this plane.  We have only bounced off three cliffs so far”

Where was this actually reported?

The Athletic article stated Ishbia decided to exit his pursuits of the Twins and buy out Sox minority owners after Jerry reached out to him.

Bob said Ishbia has been trying to buy the Sox for 5-10 years and been told no

10 years ago, Reinsdorf was in his late 70s and I'm not surprised he had no interest in selling.  Now, he just passed his 89th birthday and he's surely thinking about succession plans given that he's already said that he wants his family to sell the Sox after he dies.  Though he's apparently healthy now, at his age a sudden decline in health can come quickly.   So, him telling Ishbia no 5 or 10 years ago doesn't necessarily tell us much about the current situation IMO.

Not since 5-10 years ago. Over the past 5-10 years.

Agreed

Yeah I miss read what was posted.  Thanks for the clarification.

Nonetheless, it's not unreasonable to think that, even though Jerry has been telling him no over the past 5-10 years, that things are different now.  Perhaps he didn't want to lose Ishbia as a potential successor since he was about the buy the Twins.  Or maybe he sees that he's reached a dead end with the state over funding for a new stadium and needs a deep-pocketed investor.  Or maybe Jerry has finally decided it's time to start putting a succession plan in motion even if he wasn't ready for this a few years ago.
