Workman looks to be a really good Rule 5 pickup.  25 years old, plays multiple positions, and looks like he can hit.  I think he sticks on their roster all year.

I'm not sure about that. Bench of Carson Kelly, Justin Turner, Jon Berti and they need a CF.

Could the Tigers use another outfielder?  What if the Cubs trade Alexander Canario to the Tigers for the full rights to retain Gage Workman?  I believe the Cubs could then option Workman to the minors, and wouldn’t have to worry about the Rule 5 restrictions.  Recently signed Travis Jankowski could be their backup CF and they could call up Workman later in the season if they have any injuries.

Longterm? No

Not saying he’s arod but I’d imagine if he has a strong enough arm he can stay at short until he’s 27-28 and then head over to 3rd. He is unlikely to have great range at SS but neither did some good ones like Uribe either. We will see I think the speed of the game at SS at MLB is too much for a lot of guys so we will see if he’s even below average there. If he’s hitting 240/340/480 that’s still a 5 war player regardless.

I’m all for trading Robert to the Reds for Arroyo to facilitate his move to 3B.  Make the defense even better.

Honestly I don’t want to have a semien 2 here. Give him a couple seasons see how he performs and if he shows improvement. We don’t have anything to lose and the young guys on staff can get over it imo.

Huh?  How is it Semien 2? We aren’t saying trade him. Just move to 3B

Semien was written off as a guy that would never be able to play even an adequate SS by this org. He then went on to become by all accounts a solid defensive SS for half a decade. Not sure how you got trade him out that but perhaps I wasn’t clear enough. Guys improve until proven they can’t. We aren’t in any window other than suck for a couple years might as well try a baptism by fire and a couple offseasons of hard work and see what he does.

Colson absolutely should be playing SS until he proves he can’t (which to me, should be a couple seasons at least before the inevitable strike and while we suck). If he has to shift to 3B, it’s completely fine if he hits.

Uribe had unbelievable hands and one of the best arms in the game to make up for that...

Arroyo doesn’t impress me at all

If he can play defense and hit a bit, I’m fine with it.  I am horrified by the thought of going into the season with Robert and him getting injured and the Sox not even being able to trade him.  You know it’s going to happen if they keep him beyond ST.
