Seems it might be contingent on how fucked the right side of the infield is since they couldn't get the tarp on it for a prolonged period.

I think the main reason you rarely see it is there's a lot more swing and miss in todays game than there used to be. It's fine when you make contact but it can backfire like most any designed play .Executed perfectly it's great when you hit the ball to the spot the fielder just left.
