He also noted that the organization has "people working on it behind the scenes," too. “I think that’s probably the next progression in hitting -- finding out where you hit the ball in the sweet spot, putting more mass there, without changing too many things,” Asche said. White Sox manager Will Venable first heard about the "Torpedo" bats Sunday morning. "I think that everyone across the league probably now is going to be looking into using these," Venable said. WhiteSox2023 Posted March 31 Share Posted March 31 (edited) I do wonder if this new torpedo bat design will cause more foul balls if you miss the sweet spot, as opposed to a standard bat that has the same diameter throughout the head of the bat, which could have resulted in more fair base hits if missing the sweet spot, due to the uneven bat head? Most bats, interestingly enough, haven't maximized the circumference of their bats. This means the end really isn't that much thinner. Where the Yankees have taken this a step further (hilarious to hear sox just heard about it lol) is they've actually built custom barrels based on where the player most frequently makes contact. Volpes stack is more towards the handle than the sweet spot. This means I'd guess that you wouldn't see much difference in off-the end contact types and quality as the end of the bats have not changed much. Ahhh, I didn’t know that was part of it — the bats being custom. I thought the thick “torpedo” location was standard throughout all the bats. Even more interesting. During yesterday's game, Steve and John talked a bit about the bats, and they said some players don't care for them. If other teams are really bent out of shape about the Yankees hitting a s%*# ton of home runs while using the bats, maybe they should try using the bats, too. Or maybe, the Brewers just got their asses handed to them by a team flush with power hitters, and now they're pissed.
