Taking a peek at Martin's pitch metrics...

He's continuing to go with a very changeup-heavy approach but also mixing in a sinker that he can't throw for a strike. That said, nothing he's throwing has been in the zone much today and he's been fairly wild in the zone too. Velo is down about 1.5mph across the board.

His 4-seamer has 5 inches more induced vertical break than his long-term average today; in other words, a ton more rise than normal. Very different pitch. It's really the only pitch that hasn't hurt him today, despite lowered velo. You could see as that nightmare inning went on he started to realize that pitch was one he could trust more than the others.

Overall, the *average* exit velo given up by Martin today is unremarkable but he just can't throw a strike so he's given up some very hot contact when it mattered. Hope he can take something useful from the outing (and that the dip in velo is because of the cold).

Thinking further on this, Martin's 4-seamer also has a lot less armside run than usual today. Makes me wonder if he had been working in sinkers in the past but they weren't distinct enough for Statcast to pick up on it. Today's sinkers have near-identical spin rates to his 4-seam which would make it more likely that they get mistakenly grouped together.

It's a little worse when your GM is the worst talent evaluator in the game.

Was hilarious. I think the Sox will find at least 2 real starters out of this group, but those who thought the unit were solid had lost their mind and just ignored all the data available to them.

Robert can go away anytime now. Trade him for a bucket of balls.

Robert is going to return us a lottery ticket at this rate

Bases loaded, nobody out, 1 run.

Glad I didn't drive to Detroit this weekend to witness this.....of course I'm usually glad when I choose not to drive the 20 minutes to Sox park for the same reason.

I was in Detroit for the home opener yesterday (invited by some tigers fans friends of ours). I saw 3 other Sox fans. 44,000 people, and I saw 3 other Sox fans. I know our team sucks but I was expecting to see more than that. But I get it.

And I thought this team was an utter embarrassment last year. Sell the fing team Jerry. You have a buyer just do it already. The only chance this franchise has is a huge influx of cash and an owner willing to spend it like the Dodgers.

That's a bit of an outrageous statement.....wait a minute, how big of a bucket are we talking about?

This team is inferior to the entire rest of the MLB.

Idk the Angel's had me wondering...

At least 4 left in scoring position. This should actually be a game

Maybe they were undercover?

So....so so so so so tired of Luis Robert.

5 gallon. At least.

They did look pretty bad, I agree.

Very different end results, but I thought Martin looked horrible in his first outing. I'm not going to call this one good, but he at least has gotten a few swings and misses and found his four seam shape again. Optimistically, I hope he's learning his own arsenal a bit better. Downside of all the tinkering he does with his pitch mix is it can leave you without a good idea of what you should be throwing.

"I'm on it....might have to get a 3rd team involved though to pull that off"

i was going to say something about the other team having players so they can make mistakes against us then realized that the white sox are all mistakes anyways so we  don't have that luxury

Whats Vaughns ground ball rate vs Eloys last year?

got money on a 4 pitch strike out

the best we can do is sunflower seeds

Reese Olson looks like one of those old Hummel figuerines.

Have been scratching my head about how it is that Korey Lee had a such a great spring and was immediately relegated to a platoon role. Thaiss doing his job pretty well made me inclined not to complain much but Lee continuing to hit still makes me wonder. Weird miscue at home plate today notwithstanding

4/26, 9 K's.

Impressive season start.

I appreciate Schriffen trying to find the silver lining, but 32-year-old Cam Booser finding himself doesn't make a 7-2 score less embarrassing.
