Player Development is going great!  But also, we don't trust any of the kids to play until we absolutely have to, and will invent roadblocks to ensure it.

  • Holy s%*#, the meltdowns over Dan Freaking Altavilla.

Such a great trend, we need homeless players because we don't trust the pitching dev at AAA.

I hope you're (not that I'm saying I've seen you use it) not going to use the old it's not even 6/30 yet so it's too early to tell and then once 7/1 flips it's all water under the bridge and quit your bitching argument.

Not sure what you mean by bitching. I'm not the one complaining about the awful team that should be winning now.

All I'm saying is I'm giving the current FO time to prove whether they can or cant do the job. I'm not writing them off as not being able to do it.

It will take time. I'm giving them a few years to try correct this awful mess. I don't think it can be fixed in one year no matter who is charge, even if was Dombrowski.

I think the Bullpen is one of the first areas you can truly see advancements in PD, and it's one reason I'm really down on Getz.

It's the easiest place on the field to find undervalued talent. It's the easiest position to convert into success by making singular changes/tweaks and/or converting SP to RP's to maximize. If the Sox can't find any young bullpen arms, why would anyone think they're going to find talent at much more competitive and invested positions?

Guessing he was brought up for the same money. Ie his original deal would be a 1 million dollar deal if called up. Sox give him a million here as a courtesy and/or to avoid a player's association grievance to get around that. Just a guess though.

It’s probably not that much of a difference since the MLB deal is prorated but you think they would have just called up a guy like Karinchak rather than spend additional money.  I mean, I know they can’t say this but the worst record after the Rockies is a pretty big deal this season.

You are probably right.  But I will give Getz and gang credit for Fedde, Smith, Vasil, and now Houser (if he keeps it up).  I mention Vasil cuz I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Sox shift him back to a starter after this season.  It’s a bit strange that they seem to be better at the tougher task of identifying starting pitching talent but aren’t so good at the easier task you mention (bullpen).

You'll be able to take Houser off that list by the middle of June.

Smith was really nice. Fedde not nearly as unknown, but a nice sign - looks more like a little lightening in a bottle given his performance since, but still they got something for it so a win none the less.

The Sox trading Crochet when they did was a big fail, imo, and I've been pretty clear about that. His value was only going to grow, despite him losing time of control. I'd have kept him, period, but if you were going to trade him you should have done it later as he continues to establish himself as a true league-wide #1.

I think Cease was the bigger fail.  You could be right on Crochet, but I can’t imagine a team offering that much more than the return from the Red Sox.  Although it would have been nice to pry Anthony, Montgomery, and Meidroth away instead.

Why would Getz give this 32-year old bum a million dollars guaranteed?

I start to think this is TLR and not Getz.

if this is in fact true, then who know how much "authority" Getz has don't we?

It was probably a question of the 40-man roster.  They've been making a few moves lately where that has been mentioned.  If Altavilla had an opt-out in his contract by, say, Memorial Day, the decision might have been between releasing someone else or him.   The injury a few days later opened a spot on that 40-man roster.

Castro isn’t on the 60-day IL. The open spot was due to Thaiss deal.

Good point.  What was the 40-man situation like over the weekend?  There have been a lot of moving pieces in the past couple weeks.  Maybe they did make a decision between Castro and Altavilla.

Especially since we have had a bunch of high end arms and Katz/Bannister are supposed to be wonderkins.  But also this 32 year old homeless vet is who we are going to play over those guys.  We have to wait, but also we aren't going to give the older kids a chance.

It would make a ton of sense why so many of the same things keep happening.

Wrong thread

Crochet is arguably the best pitcher in baseball. The prize prospect they got was in the 40's.

They could have done much better had Garrett even shown just what he has through 55 games this year.

Campbell probably.

No way they were giving up Mayer/SS or Anthony/CF.

Any idea what the highest ranked prospect / prospect package given up for an ace with control?  Maybe there just isn’t a comparable trade that happened recently?  I can’t remember.  But I do think that teams just aren’t given up too prospects in trades like they used to.

I actually think this is interesting and maybe deserves its own thread.  Crochet has been everything Boston could have hoped for yet they are 28-31.  If he was still with the WS, I am not sure Boston would even be in on him in a trade.  Also, Boston wouldn't know if they could sign him to an extension and the way he is pitching, he might want more than what he did accept.

The WS end of the deal.  Meidroth is a 23 yo who has a .360 OBP in MLB, 1.1 WAR to this point and is playing decent SS.  In Law's updated top 50 minor leaguers, Montgomery is #20 and Teel #24. Gonzalez is 23yo, in AAA(though bullpen) 1.42 ERA but walking too many.

I am not sure you get a better deal today.  I kinda think it has been a win win and we know JR wasn't going to allow 170 million or more future commitment to keep Crochet.

this is a sign-to-peddle situation.  Guy throws 97.   Good move.

Same with Houser -starter who hits 95 (mea culpa on him).

2 excellent moves.

He's pitched in 7 mlb games the last 5 seasons and got a million bucks? That would be double the minimum at this point. Seems dumb but not my money. Not like that guy had a choice either.

It's a prorated $1M contract which means it's close to the minimum of $760K.

Who was the Minor League Director for a good portion of Hahns tenure? This is the issue. The guy has had his chance and he failed upward  You need to be pretty drunk to think he is the guy that is going to fix this. Now, they compare everything to last year. The most losses in the history of modern baseball. And a slight uptick has some excited. They are a garbage organization.

If you don't see signs of progress you aren't paying attention and that's in all areas. The problem is some believe that there's progress being made and some don't want to see it and don't have the patience for it. So what's happening now is just the countdown until the Sox get a new owner like it or not. Maybe 5 years from now we have a new owner and the infrastructure is in place and drafting and development is better and we have international prospects for once. It's possible.

Jerry isn't spending money and nothing of significance can be accomplished except get the highest draft pick you can in 2026 which they are succeeding at so far. Do you honestly want them to win enough games this year to blow that ?

No GM can just come out and say all that. So they spend a little more on veteran bums and preserve the service time of a few relief pitching arms in AA. As much as I was advocating for those young or even the mid 20s arms they will still be here and come up later when wins are more important than they are now.

Is Altavilla a guy who had opt-out rights? Did we cut him because he said he was going to opt out?

Answering my own question: good folks at Sox Machine report that indeed he demanded his release because in Houser-like fashion, he thought he'd done enough to get a MLB deal. Turns out he was right.
