If you cut it down to 120 PA’s you get Vargas as 16th out of 39 possible players.

So still essentially your average 3B across thirty teams.

When the definition of mired in mediocrity is your very best position guy, you still have a LONG way to go as a team.

Pretty much wherever you set the cut off, dude is in the low end of the middle tier.

A good article about how and why the Sox are handling Brooks Baldwin.

White Sox trying to buy time for Brooks Baldwin's development, but their roster has insufficient funds - Sox Machine

While Baldwin couldn't be more different from Elko in most regards, he's running into a similar sort of wall. My sense is that Baldwin thrives against pitchers who have their own issues to iron out. He offers outstanding plate coverage and the ability to make quality contact in all directions, and if he's facing somebody who's merely concerned about getting ahead of the count, he can ambush them for so, so many first-pitch homers.

At the major league level, when game plans are more designed on defeating hitters than developing arms, pitchers can rather easily deploy a form of judo against Baldwin's aggression as they learn more about it.

So they are stopping Baldwin from being in the majors because he has a flaw that MiLB pitchers don't exploit or expose, meaning he won't get practice to fix it.

Brilliant.

Major League pitching is smart enough to exploit Baldwin’s aggressiveness, so in order to fix the issue, he gets to face inferior pitching that doesn’t challenge him and isn’t capable of exploiting his weaknesses.

Make it make sense…

All so Vinny Capra and Josh Rojas can get their sizeable flaws dogwalked all over MLB instead.

IMO, one has to watch or attend a lot of games in order to make sweeping judgments about this team.

Quero, Teel, Vargas, and Meidroth have been surprisingly good and fun to watch ... if you enjoy baseball or the White Sox.

But it's your ballgame here so whatever.

I’m not making any judgments. Having the worst record in baseball since 2023 isn’t a judgment. It’s fact.

Capra has started 4 of the last 6 games. The at bats are there, especially if you expand into the OF over Slater and Taylor, giving days off to Sosa, Meidroth, Vargas, etc.

It's pretty obvious they have no interest in playing Baldwin at SS unless it's in a pinch. I'd personally play Meidroth at SA nearly everyday, and with AV and Elko gone, Sosa can cover 1B opening 2B for Baldwin. But they aren't ready to cut bait on Rojas. Regardless, Baldwin will get plenty of ABs in Aug and Sep.

Baldwin will be back up after the TDL, Sox have been doing this s%*# the last 2 years, give the old dudes every opportunity to get hot so they can try and get something for them at the deadline.  same s%*# will happen next year and the year after that too

Before his initial demotion, Baldwin seemed to be pretty clearly spiraling and was becoming unplayable on both sides of the ball. He barely got a look on his latest trip but made sure to look hopeless at the plate and make an error at his supposed natural position in his very brief call-up. Even if he is somehow tailor-made to beat AAA pitching but not MLB pitching, I think it makes some sense to have him in AAA whether you are high or low on Brooks. Get him everyday ABs and reps in whatever defensive position he might be able to bring the most value to. There will be opportunities for more regular playing time in MLB soon enough.

If you follow the gospel of April 23rd, 2025, Vargas is 9/29 at 3B and 2/33 at 1B in that period.
