Getz on Sunday draft...

Recommended Posts

Appreciate the insights into their thought process. I am probably nitpicking, but I just wish it wasn't portrayed as the right choice in the paraphrasing done.

For example, if you passed on drafting a bat because you didn't have Ryan Fuller... how could we not be asking "but didn't you already PLAN on having the hitting instruction built out when you were drafting last year, so why would you allow your poor infrastructure that you were rebuilding to influence your future plans? Shouldn't you be selecting based on where you want to be, and not based on the past failures?"

That's what I thought of reading through the post.

yeah but also jesus christ he was hired the previous July and wasn't the whole point of Getz that he 'knew what they needed'...he moved so much slower than a regular old new gm cleaning house and bringing...uh...people that can teach hitting.

I get, I guess, feeling like you'd want alignment on a top 6 pick and your PD team which wasn't there yet. It is absurd you didn't have that 12 months in.

I don't take any of it at face value or beyond face value. It's all just fluff imo.

Agreed. No GM in any sport is honest right before a draft.

Imagine the Nationals who fired their GM and manger 6 days before the draft and having the number 1 pick in a draft without a clear number 1.

This pick will be talked about for years. Positive or negative.

I am not sure if that is better  or worse than letting your front office make the picks and then firing them.

Yeah it’s totally fair. I wasn’t trying to justify anything. Hagen Smith is a really good prospect though and ownership will never pay for guys like that. I still would’ve taken a bat though.

Most fans don't care. It's not like it's the NFL or NBA.  Most fans couldn't even list their farm teams.

Not talking about the fans. Within the industry analysis. The podcasts will be all over it.

NOT THE PODCASTS NOOOOOOOOO

To each his iwn. You get your entertainment where you want and I'll find mine. You're missing a lot if you don't follow people who do this for a living.

If any franchise is spending time caring about what the talking heads are saying,  they need other jobs.

Who said anything about the organizations caring? I believe I mentioned podcasts and entertainment which you mocked.

The Orioles just traded a completely average reliever for the 37th pick... what the hell..

Mike Elias on a bad day runs circles around Getz & Co.

Agreed, but he's (Elias) already pissed away a 1st window by hoarding his prospects like they were his 1st born.

This latest trade leaves them with 4 of the 1st 37 picks and 7 in the 1st 93.

Prospect hoader Elias now there's a name to look up to. Especially with the tremendous job he's doing in Baltimore.

There's the flip side to this...

AJ Preller has traded away a whole complete team of All Star talents like Trea Turner, Munoz/Sea, Wood/Gore/Abrams, Naylor, Rooker, Fried, Bednar, E.Clase, Ph.Maton, etc. over the last decade.

Which is worse?

The Padres totally went for it last year and are still right there for the third WC spot, but they also have Cease King (IL) Arraez and Suarez they theoretically might be better off trading, rebuilding for the longer term future with an actual injection of young prospects.

No doubt he has taken the prospected hugging to the extreme, and has failed to this point in finding the right balance between youth and veterans to reach sustained success. He did a lot right to get to that point though, which is more than we can say about Getz.
