The Future of the White Sox TV Broadcast Team

I don't know man, most of what I see (outside of him being chummy with Big Podcast[s]) is people not enjoying him/PBP. He obviously has some fans out there, and maybe the detractors are just the "vocal minority" type of situation, but I tend to side with the feedback I get (myself included), that while he's certainly improved he's still not good at the job.

He's not popular on Sox twitter. He's just a bottom tier play by play guy. Is what it is. He's improved to an acceptable level but is it quality? No.

The biggest problem with all his manufactured excitement is he knows very little about the White Sox. I bet before he interviewed for the job, he couldn’t name 5 guys on the roster. Now he’s supposedl

See, I don't think anything John does is genuine, and that is probably why it bothers me.  Both Hawk and Jason were genuine guys in their style.  John is just loud to be loud, even when the situation

Look, I get the "to each his own" thing, but after the world class announcers we have had in the city of Chicago, I can't even start to put this guy into a category anywhere near that.

We're never going to find a Hawk replacement, unfortunately.

I saw a few people here who wished Schriff made that Braden Montgomery HR call instead of Costas. Judging by the amount of positive emojis it got considering unless something is really funny positive emojis rarely get above 5.

Hawk and Wimpy was an entertaining pairing that also taught a lot about what was going on in the game. I don't think Schriff has ever uttered a sentence I found interesting. When he talks about players' game prep, or changes they're working on, my mind argues with it as something he doesn't know but was told. Hawk, Wimpy or even Stone add such a dimension. Even Benetti sounded authoritative in ways Schriff will never touch. His constant "Do you give him the green light on 3-0" is so pedestrian. Any of us who never played ball and have no broadcast experience would stop using that as a crutch after the first half dozen.

The hope is that when Ishbia takes over, Boyer is gone and Ishbia throws big money at Benetti. Doesn't seem too outlandish.

Schriff has a style that has got him to where he is today. He has the voice and enthusiasm even if he lacks extensive knowledge.

We should remember that to post on a board like this we are an opinionated bunch who take our fandom more serious than likely 75% of people who are now filling up the ballpark. I think most of the fans kind of enjoy his enthusiasm . He's basically an old fashioned hype guy like the ads we'd hear promoting old drag racing and funny cars. SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY where the great ones run !

While it seemed ludicrous while they were losing he's now a voice for the excitement and people want to be pumped up. The more fans you get pumped the more they come to see why everyone is so excited. Everywhere you turn , talk radio, MLB Network, the Sox are a HUGE story whether you think they should be or not.

While there is still a lot of caution because JR is still in charge, most casual Sox fans want to get out and have fun and cheer for this group of players. John is a cheerleader and enthusiastic young blood.

Fair to say we're an opinionated bunch. However most casual fans i know both as friends and family, stopped watching for 2 reasons: horrid play and the unlistenable broadcast. I can tolerate him now, and I dont wish him any ill will, but when casual fans tune out because an announcer is too cringy thats not good business. My wife is just starting to watch again after years of ignoring them and she walks out of the room when John starts with some of his hammy bits.

It just makes his backstory about being a D1 level pitching talent until he blew out his arm even more of "yea, sure John" thing. He clearly wasn't around much baseball until he got this gig. Basic things he still struggles with and Stone has to bail him out.

Speaking of stone, last game with costas, pitch clearly hits off the forearm, not elbow guard of some Brave, replay plays 2-3 times, Stone, arrogant as ever, doesn't even correct himself. I mean come on man. That's what happens when you have a blank check from JR for decades. You can't even inform the viewers that that you said a minute ago wasn't actually correct. With TV it's obviously less of a faux paus but still.

Look, I have spent parts of 4 decades broadcasting high school sports. I can absolutely speak for myself in that there is a huge difference in the quality of the broadcasts of the games I lived and breathed, versus the ones I don't have as much experience in. Playing might help, but it is obvious when someone THINKS the game, versus just describes what they see happening in front of them. There is a depth that guys who think the game have, that others don't. While I can't stand Steve Stone, you can't help but see his ability to breath in a game, and understand what is coming. Even a guy like Jason has a feel for sports that he combines with his ability to find whatever his partner is best at and have them do it most. I don't see that in Schiff. I don't see any of that in him. He's energetic, loud, colorful, and excited, but in a sport like baseball, filling the dead air is the most important part, and he struggles to do it. He's not made for baseball.

I actually think Jason Benetti disproves this theory. I don't like Benetti as much as many here appear to because I personally like my announcers to be as invested in winning and losing as I am as a fan... because I grew up with Hawk Harrelson and that's the bar that was set. I hate that sports have moved away from this, and I actually don't understand why they have. Jason obviously doesn't have a "feel for sports...." Come on. He's just well researched, studies the material, and knows how to action it. The guy obviously cannot relate to what is happening on the field... come on.

Jason was so fucking chummy when they were bad, but at least he didn't lie to your face like Schiff has. The only thing that's changed about Schiff this year is the team is playing well. I don't even listen to the Sox announcer feed anymore because Schiff is that bad.

Costas made it seem like he was tricked into calling that game, he wasn't paying attention, didn't know the score, yet somehow he did 100 times the job that Schiff did. It's amazing honestly.

Ironically the most sad the Sox ever made Jason was the other week.

Costas said he was told by the Sox they did not want him doing play by play (and he said in an interview he wasn't taking the gig if they insisted on it), that he was there to talk about the Sox of the 1980's that Connor was supposed to be handling that end.

He said that he 'called' Montgomery's game winner because 'someone had to do it.'

Connor was in the booth with Costas and Stone ? Someone had to do it because Costas never shut up . There really wasn't any room for a PBP guy.

Connor did the first two innings. Costas was doing what the Sox asked him to do according to the interview in the Sun-Times.

There's something about the cadence. Costas just delivers. Schriff always exaggerates the ups and downs of his voice like he's reading a bedtime story to a child. Just be excited, not boastful.

I wouldn't be shocked if Benetti gets the Pat Foley treatment upon the ownership change

I'd love to see that.

I'd imagine there could be quite a few Sox fan favorites who get "repatriated" upon ownership change: Fisk, Thomas, Black Jack, AJ are the ones I can think off the top of my head.

Didnt even think of it this way before, but this is 100%. Absolutely plays a role.

What a bait and switch by the White Sox.

I knew something seemed off.

Cadence is absolutely part of it. He's in tied game, with 10 seconds to go in game 7 of overtime mode.. all of the time. Most of baseball is at a 2 or 3. He's at 9 or 10 way too often.

That's his slamball/UFC background. It simply doesn't translate.
