If they traded him in July, we would’ve killed them for what the return would’ve been. This is the better path.

Robert had the best stretch he's had in 2 seasons, the 6 weeks right before the deadline.
Hard to see the offers getting better.

Now I do think that a lot of GMs see Getz as a punching bag and consider  anything less than a rip-off as a loss for them.

Getz needs to up his game.

What would be the projected payroll next season without Robert? Benintendi at $17mil, Steven Wilson at arb-2, then 24 guys making under $800k? What is that, about $40mil? Maybe a few veterans to bump it up to $50mil?

That would be unprecedentedly low. Minnesota seems to be in pretty dire financial straits and they'll commit $47mil alone to Pablo Lopez, Buxton, a retained Correa. Could've actually gotten something of value if they traded Lopez and Buxton.

It would look really bad if the option wasn't picked up and Robert played like he did the first four years of his career, 6 WAR per 162 games. Even if he only plays like 100 games, that's about 4 WAR. It doesn't look bad at all if he sucks and eats up some payroll. Not like there's a salary cap. It isn't our money.

Also Bob Nightengale is perhaps the worst writer in baseball. What "executives" did he speak to and did they actually use the word unfathomable? The guy has been on a trolling spree lately too. Nonetheless, the operative phrase is  "just so they can trade him next summer". Yes, it would be very dumb to trade him in a few months. It would be smart to let him play out the year or at least to the deadline and see what happens.

Getz flat out said in the Garfein podcast that the injury doesn’t change their plans.

I think that's significant but a lot can change between now and the winter especially when you are dealing with JR.

If that’s true, it’s a massive problem. It’s not an offseason decision. It’s a July decision.

I have agreed with you about the Robert situation the entire time.  The decision must have been made to pick up Robert’s option when he wasn’t traded, outside of a major injury.  This is not a major injury.  If Getz buys out Robert, I’ll be shocked and it will be more fuel than necessary to call for his firing.  Even a weak trade return is better than nothing at all.

really?  You haven't seen enough of those?  It's the buffoonery of baseball.  I guess you could follow that AA bench warmer who can't even live up to the dumpster dive player and say "at least we don't have Robert".

No shortage of weak trade returns to satisfy our trade fenzy from over exposure of being a habitual losing small market team.

Yes, perhaps a prospect in a weak Robert trade return breaks out?  Getting absolutely nothing back for Robert results in ZERO.  This is simply fact.

Sure, both results could end up being the same, but at least there’s a chance if you actually get some propsect(s) back that may pan out to some extent — bullpen reliever, bench player, etc.
