Finding a decent veteran starter for $5 million will be another fun roll of the dice.  Relying on Gomez?  I don’t see how that is even the rotation of a .500 team.

Also, while some guys will continue to develop, other guys will no doubt experience a sophomore slump.

Sure, that's all within the realm of possibilities.

That's exactly what I was going to say.

My own thought is they'll win in the mid-to-upper 70s next season and competing for the division in 2027. They might be "really good" in 2028. He has them two whole years behind that.

Doubtful and who knows there may not even be a season in 2027.

I have a very hard time thinking this bunch especially with a limited rotation and an atrocious bullpen is going to go from 60 to 75 wins myself but you do you.

They played .430 ball after the ASB. That rounds up to 70 wins over 162. Next season's rotation probably looks something like Shane Smith, Davis Martin, Gomez, Grant Taylor and a wily, cheap veteran. Burke probably competes for a spot, too. I contend that the same team develops further and adds 5+ wins to their 2nd half performance level.

You seem to be implying that they won't be able to run a pitcher out there who can do better than Jon Cannon's -0.5 bWAR. That was a weird rule change where MLB stopped letting baseball teams add players in the off-season.

LoL.

Sure, and Colson will maintain a Ohtani/Schwarber/Raleigh HR pace as well....

They need three starters.

Burke Cannon and Gomez can't be relied upon.

One might be Thorpe eventually... but no sure thing there.

Burke, Cannon and Gomez were worth half a win between the three of them. I guess it's fun to pretend there is no way for a team to do better than that, they'll plug in 3 ineffective starting pitchers, and nobody will step up and outperform them. That's essentially the logic you're using.

The same logic applies to the White Sox not being the 29th or 30th team in MLB every season.

Or relying on Rule 5 picks every year to fill out a staff.

No team in modern baseball has pulled that off two consecutive years.. adding starting rotation pieces.

You're not making an argument, now. The World Series isn't even over. There's an entire off-season to play out. You're assuming they will acquire nobody, will plug in the same 5 guys who finished the season in the rotation, and not replace them if they fail.

They don't need to pick two winning Powerball tickets in the Rule 5 again. I'm really not even sure what you're arguing. I think I've explained my reasoning.

The cheap White Sox aren’t going to give up on Burke in the rotation.  I would say he’s probably a lock if he stays healthy through ST.  They will probably sign one veteran starter for around $5 million and sign multiple cheap options for next to nothing to compete with guys like Cannon and Gomez for the backend.  The rotation is going to look like a rotation that bad teams have.

I agree with this. And they're going to be serious in the Rule 5. They're not going to spend money. But they're not going to keep running guys out there who aren't producing. In 2024, they had no depth. Last year, they had no depth but played the waiver wire well. Next year, they'll have group of pitchers to pick from.

Sadly, not caring about depth has been a White Sox game for years.  Hell, how often would they play a man short to avoid calling a player up and save a few bucks?

And as well as they did in the Rule 5 last year, there’s no way you can count on those guys.

But do they do that? I think the most craven reason I've heard was the Sox used to not use the DL to keep their league numbers better. They'll keep a guy on the bench for a couple of days in the hope that he heals up, and the starter is worth more for 10 days than a replacement player is for 15. This year, they've even called a guy up for a single game, then demoted him just to have that 26th guy the one game before Robert came off the IL, or something. If they've tried to save one day of league minimum salary in the past, I'm unaware.

They finished tied for 22nd in the second half.  Not really that decent.

I actually thought they were better than that, now I remember we had a long losing streak at the end that put a kibosh on things including avoiding 100 losses.

Sasaki with a tightrope act...Freeman and Edman preserve the tie.

Hoffman in a non-closing situation.

Ohtani with a shot at a walk off.

Or Betts or Freeman.

Ohtani steal if walked?

Caulfield you are pulling a Caulfield

Antonacci, B. Monty, Schultz, McDougal, and they get Thorpe and Adams back.

Anyone of those guys could have a breakout season with the Sox.

The Blue Jays Trey Yesavage started game 1 and is starting tonight in game 5 off the World Series, let that sink in,

If any of those guys did so that would be a big help.

Burke is still a young guy with good stuff.  I would not give up on him.....

Yesavage is on another level than any of these guys, and still his jump is massive outlier. Sox are going to need a lot more than a breakout season or two to even sniff .500.

Three years is a long time to enter contention. Geez.

Watching the playoffs and series it reiterates the idea of a good bullpen now are guys that throw blazing fastballs that hitters foul off then finally whiff on (or the rare offspeed pitch). Do the Sox have a plethora of minor league young arms right now that fit that bill?

Anyhow saying 3 years is suggesting we stink and will stink.

They will still stink...just maybe not quite as bad.
