2025 Rule 5 Thread

Chicago White Sox

Recommended Posts

For now, the White Sox look at Paez as a multi-inning reliever a la Vasil, with starting potential down the road, while Alberto is a pure reliever with some leverage ceiling.

"We’ve been talking about them for the last couple of weeks," said White Sox GM Chris Getz. "In Paez, for one, multiple weapons. A lot of different pitches. He’s got an arsenal to navigate to both-sided hitters. He obviously hasn’t pitched at the upper levels, but in terms of the command and the amount of pitches he has, our group was really excited about it. Long-term wise, we view him as a real starter for us. In the meantime, obviously navigating a season with a Rule 5, have to have pitchers oftentimes that have some versatility. Mike Vasil comes to mind, where he can really help in a lot of different ways. Paez is very similar in that sense.

"Alberto, the guy’s got big-time stuff. It’s a unique pitch with his cutter. Obviously he hasn’t pitched at upper levels. When you’re going through the Rule 5, you look at some of the candidates, there’s always a reason why there’s availability on some of those players. Some of it is just the gap between where they’ve pitched and the big leagues, injury history, what have you. In this sense, we feel like this is a chance worth taking on both of those guys and we’ve proven last year that we were able to navigate with two Rule 5 picks, three at one point. We’re excited to see what these guys can do for us."

Hate that we didn’t protect Pallette. Pleased he was the only guy taken though, he wouldn’t have been my first choice of the guys we didn’t protect. I know nothing about the two guys we selected but there is now an “Alexander Alberto” and “Alexander Albertus” in the system. Griff McGarry is the guy I liked and the Nats took him right after us.

Pretty high probability that Palette is walking 6-7 per 9 in the bigs and he's back in the Sox system by mid season. He may find his way into a MLB bullpen eventually, but his command still needs a lot of work.

Yeah I think he’ll be back. We didn’t protect Mason right? That guy should’ve been picked. Him and Murphy could turn in potentially above average seasons in mlb. Adams especially since he’s still on the IL I believe.

Adams was not a surprise.

He’s the best RHP in the system, is mlb ready and can be hidden on the IL/off the 40 man until further notice. Unless there’s some huge drop in ability that nobody has reported on, it’s certainly surprising. He’s a better prospect than Pallette to be sure and both are ready to be in mlb.

He likely wouldn’t be on the active roster long enough though to where he can be selected in the Rule 5 next offseason though.

Better than McDougal and Oppor?

More advanced perhaps, but definitely not the best stuff/potential upside.

Their 40-man is at 37. They seem to be interested in Pete Fairbanks, O'Hearn and they might want Tauchman back. Pick up any bullpen arm, and now you're cutting somebody. They probably just like the upside of Alexander and Paez better than Pallette.

I see at least 5 or 6 guys currently on the 40-man I would have cut before Pallette, but it’s most likely just shuffling deck chairs on the titanic.

I said it previously that Adams isn't the type of dude that gets drafted while injured in the Rule 5 draft.  I received many a lecture on why that wasn't true.

In my defense,  he wasn't drafted, so I ended up being right making the back and forth over this topic immaterial.

Well I’m glad we have him.

Oppor is lefty, but Mason is certainly behind Tanner after his progression last year. But beyond that, I'm not sure who's ahead of him.

Oops. Keep forgetting.

Adams always seemed more like another Davis Martin.  Back end 4/5 starter on a good team who can eat up innings and maintain a respectable ERA.

We didn’t have Pallette as a top 30 prospect anymore

This season with CLE will be the test, won't it?

Unless you're going to be an elite closer, you probably have no business being all the way up at #14 unless you have a weak/er minor league system.

He still maintains a little of that rumored Top Ten pick buzz from the 2021-22 cycle.

CLE has no choice but to fill out their last eight to ten roster spots with guys near the minimum salary.  But they can't just waste a spot all season long if not contributing.

I think I must have read "Pallette Coffey Schoenle" 100 times last year...was that Cali?  Kind of like Adams and S.Murphy with rockway.

No you don't. You see 5 or 6 guys you're not excited by and who play positions that Pallette doesn't. Sure, let's cut Ben Cowles and Tanner Murray, because who needs to carry minor league backup infielders during the off-season? Can't we just pick up guys like Jacob Amaya or Vinnie Capra off the waiver wire and plug them in? That always works so well.

Derek Hill? Yeah, he sucks. Just toss Tim Elko an outfielder's mitt, and he'll be a 5-WAR player, right? Or maybe you're looking at guys who actually pitched against major league hitters, and didn't completely suck chode like Tyler Gilbert or Brandon Eisert? No, they're not 2nd rounders, but they can get outs in the bigs. Peyton Pallette isn't better than those guys.
