White Sox acquired RHPs Jordan Hicks and David Sandlin from BOS

Of the 9 guys I listed as possible DFA, only 3 have options left. The Sox just DFA’d 2 of them. Not a huge deal, but the last day of Spring is gonna be a day of reckoning because not all of those guys who are out of options are gonna make this team.

Getz confirms Sandlin will get a chance to start

I wonder if this is it for the rotation.  Enter the season with Smith, Martin, & Key, and two of Burke, Newcomb, Cannon, & Sandlin.  Then hope that some combo of the TJS crew and top prospects in AAA/AA push for spots by mid season.  Just feels like a big chunk of the money that could have gone for a mid rotation was allocated to Hicks.

Guessing Smith, Martin, Kay, Burke, Newcomb. Certainly not written in stone however.

Newcomb contract says he gets a shot to start.

How I feel as well. They must really believe in Sandlin.

This is the part that I’m struggling with.  Feels like between the group of guys with no options left, the likelihood now that at least one Rule 5 guy gets returned, and the possibility of some of the TJS guys going on the 60 day IL, there is going to be a windfall of open 40 man roster spots at some point before OD.  Which makes the decision to protect Palette at the expense of certain others all the more puzzling.

Yep, seems like they wanted Sandlin badly and think he’s a better investment for a future and long-term starter option than spending $10+ million a year on a short-term free agent starter option.

Bullpen is filling up fast now.  There are now five locks from the right side in Dominguez, Hicks, Leasure, Taylor, & Vasil plus two potential Rule 5 picks (the odds of both sticking is slim now IMO baring a camp injury).  I know Venable liked having three lefties last year, but seems extremely likely it will only be two at this point and we are fairly week from that side if Newcomb starts the year in the rotation.

Wikelman looked good for his cup of coffee but maybe back to AAA to get the walk rate down unless he balls out in ST with K' s popping and BB's vanishing.

He probably will be at some point but he was promised a shot at starting.

Promised is strong here. He’ll compete as a starter in spring. I’d be pretty surprised if he’s not in the bullpen though. It’s his best role.

Jimmy, Baron.  I will try again

Anyone have any idea of the quality of the PTBNL?  Contingent on health or performance?  Total nothing burgers or could there be some king of legitimate prospects either way?

I read somewhere that he' d be given a chance. unfortunatly I dont bookmark everything I find interesting.

I thought it was a promise or in his contract. So whatever I remember reading I thought it was strongly worded.  You pay more attention than I do likely because you do podcasts and Twitter . I do neither and only read 1 thing and dont remember seeing it again.

A lot of questioning of JR when he hired Getz. No matter what you think of them, recognize that Chris has worked his ass off trying to make the White Sox into a likeable, competitive team. I think he is on the way to doing just that.  I'm psyched for ST and opening day. Let's Go !

There was literally no existing reason to have your blind faith. Smarter to be skeptical, and adjust as things become apparent

Venable said that Newcomb would at least get a crack at the rotation in ST…

Thete are option between blind faith and skeptical such as letting things play out for a couple years and giving him a fair shake and keeping in mind we know very little except that without money his impact as GM is severely limited. You may call that skeptical. I call it being fair and open minded.

The reasoning provided to stay in house (quicker turnaround) was clear BS, and invited skepticism. You can’t ask for fair mindedness when you’re being fed nonsense

I know this isn't directed at me, but PTBNL usually aren't anything significant. The Sox have a list of possible guys they are allowed to choose from the Red Sox. Likely low minors lottery tickets. Trea Turner is the last big PTBNL to be traded, but MLB changed the rules following that deal, and we're well beyond the new deadline for drafted players to be traded.

Agree but the structure is a little unusual with 2 for White Sox and 1 PTBNL for Red Sox.  Since some people on here seemed to have legitimate information, I wondered about it.  Second reason to wonder was supposedly Sandlin failed medical initially so wondered if there was some form of protection in the class of players available (better pool if he breaksdown etc).
