I don't particularly like Benetti. I find him cringey, un-funny, and dorky in a not-loveable way. I accept that others seem to recognize him as a top-of-the-game talent for reasons I don't understand. But I have not felt his absence much. I don't like Schriffen much, either. I am annoyed by him, as I was annoyed by Benetti. I hope we get to see a third option.

But then, I also really don't care much, as I barely pay attention to the broadcast team. I'm a little puzzled by the strength of some peoples' feelings on this topic, but to each his own, I guess.

When Harry left the Sox in 1982 the Sox and Cubs were equally popular in fact in 1983 the Sox were the first Chicago baseball team to draw 2 million fans and again in 1984. 1984 turned out to be a very pivotal year in Chicago baseball history as the Cubs who weren’t that popular (Lee Elia rant) came out nowhere to win their division while the Sox floundered in 1984. Harry Caray also made a huge difference with his Cub Fan Bud Fan schtick along with the Tribune hyping Wrigley Field as the place to be in Chicago while dissing the Sox at every chance they could with other media outlets following suit, things haven’t been the same since.

Yesterday when I was speaking with my friend who has been connected to the organization for a long time they told me they recently saw JR and had a long conversation.

Among the things I was told was that JR said that "there will NOT be any baseball played next year in the big leagues." I assume JR knows what the feeling of the other owners is like and they are dead set on a salary cap even if it means sacrificing a season. And JR is one of the six owners on the committee advising Manfred on labor matters.

The subject of the broadcasters also came up.

JR said he realizes Schriffen is not a baseball guy. He asked my friend what they thought and my friend said to JR, "I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but he just isn't very good."

JR acknowledged this.

With his deal up my friend asked JR if the Sox would do anything but JR said because of the labor uncertainty he isn't going to do anything.

JR told my friend, "You know me, I never do anything during a year when there is a labor issue."

Sounds to me like when (if) the labor situation is resolved they just won't renew his deal and let him go.

Others have speculated based on what they are hearing, I think Jimmy was one of them and maybe Jeff Agrest of the Sun-Times that he won't be asked back.

We'll see how it turns out.

Sorry man. But it’s definitely a buzz kill. I would hate for there not to be baseball next season especially when our Sox are finally good and relevant again. Feels just like we are getting screwed over just like the last rebuild when Covid killed what would have probably been a fantastic full season for us in 2020 and then injuries/bad luck/terrible culture/whatever else just completely derailed the rebuild after 2021. We just can’t catch a break and it sucks.

I think it’s pretty obvious JR has been the one saying pessimistic stuff to Nightengale about next year.

That's pretty much how I feel. I will say that Schriffen is better than Connor McKnight on play-by-play, so I do not think Connor would be a good replacement. That is a tough job and as we can see, you are never going to please all fans.

Adam Amin is an excellent announcer. Not sure he would want the White Sox job, but I don't know that. I have always been partial to "homers" - announcers that are or become like Sox fans...really biased in our favor and openly contemptuous towards the Cubs and other rivals like Cleveland.

You can say the same about 1981 and certainly 1994.

Maybe they start catching breaks when Ishbia takes over?

This fucking guy wants to ruin ONE MORE baseball season/competitive White Sox season before he dies. You'd think maybe in his old age he'd soften up and want to get the season in while his team could be contenders. Instead he feels so strongly about getting the W over the players union that he'll sacrifice another season.

If Jerry had to choose between:

1. Crushing the players union, or

2. Winning another world series.

Which would he pick?
