Murakami nickname thread. Dubbed the "South Side Samurai". Will it stick?

Banal, basic, boring. Not exactly "one dog" or even "el oso" or "la pantera".

1) people don't get to pick their own nicknames. They could ask to not be called something.
2) nicknames should be organic. One-dog is a nice example. Pudge. The way the kid wearing a Michigan sweatshirt when the group meets him becomes "Michigan".
3) Moon, in Japanese is tsuki. Five is go. Destroyer is kuchiku-kan. (as per Google translate.) That's probably way more to work with right there than, "Gee, I notice you're Japanese. Do you mind if I call you by a fairly pedestrian stereotype of your culture?"

Well said and honestly I don't even really care that much but it's just another milquetoast thing from the Sox org.

The worst part about the nickname offered by Schriffen was the lead up to it and then Beckham's "Wow!" If he had just busted out the (lame) nickname without the minutes-long diatribe beforehand, it still would have sucked but not as much.

The Beckham “WOAHHH” was truly lame. 🤣 It’s like they both practiced it beforehand.

Like misspelling his locker room name plate as Munetaki?

Gordon is such a hayseed, a likable one now that he's not actively playing, but a hayseed. There was some discussion on sushi or something and Gordon was like "never tried it". Bro, you're rich, how have you never gone to a high end Japanese place, even just a steakhouse that has sushi?

Man, Schriffen is clueless. One would think a biracial dude would be sensitive to potentially racist comments/nicknames. He didn’t run his nickname idea by anyone in Sox HR/Marketing first? Just because Murakami is okay with it, that isn’t the end of the approvals. There are also Japanese fans watching the broadcast.

It looks like @Y2Jimmy0 was right and the Schriffen-dawg is on the way out.

Out but not before his guaranteed contract expires and more damage is done.

At least no Pearl Harbor jokes like 1600 with Japanese PM. Yet.

I definitely have a little empathy for Schriffen because he isn’t malicious or mean, but man does he step in it a LOT. So many unforced errors

@ron883’s question has been answered. The nickname won’t stick, and likely neither will Schriffen.

I don't think I'd call it "racist". It's just awkward and stereotypical. It's not denigrating, just lazy. But yeah, that always occurs to me about a person who is in a group that probably deals with bigotry, but nobody ever seems to be more sensitive to it.

I did say “potentially” racist. People interpret things differently. In my opinion, I would agree this is probably more stereotypical. Still surprised Schriffen didn’t run this by anyone in Sox management before saying it on air.

That's fair. If some Japanese group objected, then it's a problem, regardless of what anyone on the Sox' end thinks.

Schriffen just wasn't meant for this position. I honestly would like to know what Brooks and JR saw in him when they offered him the job. I spoke with a person in the front office who was involved in these areas and was told a number of more qualified candidates were very interested in the Sox opening.

Yet they gave the job to a guy with little to no baseball experience.

The decisions these folks make sometimes makes you stop and ask 'what were they possibly thinking?'

More experience = More money

There could be truth in this. He couldn't possibly ask for what someone with experience or who was coming from another MLB broadcasting team would be able to ask for regarding salary.

Also less likely to have a second job.

Happened to my dorm-mate.

Was with Houston during rebuild....lost his job during all those 100 loss seasons and as far as I understand is now working in college sports broadcasting, maybe Big 12.

Much more professional and polished than Schriffen.

Gotta say hate listening to him is one of the few enjoyments of the games for me. It’s like they gave Ned Flanders the job. I want him to fail every moment.

People are weak. He literally said Murakami liked Southside Samurai lol .

How about : Tankikan Nomi
